Do What I Say, Not What I Did...

When Tiffany was married about 8 years ago, I told her that I thought her gown revealed a bit too much. I wasn't aware that wedding gowns had changed so much.

"In my time," I said. (I'll bet I waggled my finger.) "We covered everything because a bride's gown should be modest. The neckline went almost to the neck and and the sleeves went down to the wrist."

This could be why she chose her gown without my help.

Well I've been scanning photos from the early 70's and was surprised to find a photo of myself wearing a dress that looks rather ummmm...short.

And here's a photo of Art and myself at our wedding rehearsal. How did I ever bend? What if the wind blew?

I know I've told Tif that her neckline is too low or her hem is too short in her young years...well, actually she's still young. She just smiled at me and did her own thing anyway. I imagine she'd be rolling her eyes if she saw these photos.

Wait... at least my arms are covered.

  1. Your photos reminded me of some of the dresses I wore. They were not as short as some but even so I had to be careful about bending down!

  3. What a lovely banner photograph.

I think we learnt to bend sideways from the waist, or bend our knees, and to be very quick to grab our skirts if there was a breeze!

  6. Tif looks beautiful! And I agree that compared to today's gowns...she is modestly dressed. My gown was not a traditional one, and it wasn't strapless and it had sleeves! I agree with you, Kay.

  8. Tiffany's wedding dress was beautiful! It is funny how we sound more like our mothers, which we said we would never be like as we have children and get older-LOL!!! I love your banner photo-just gorgeous!!

  9. LOL! Tiffany's gown is modest compared to many I have seen! It is also quite beautiful.

The 70s were famous for short skirts. I wore a few myself. My friend Ann wore her shirts so short, she had to carry a peechee to sit on. She held it behind her to cover her underwear as she bent to sit!

  11. Well, at least you have nice legs... I should never have worn mini-skirts back then. What was I thinking? LOL

  12. how funny, was that the late 60s, 1960 that is. I remember when short short dresses were all the rage. I wore them too and they weren't modest. Times have changed yet not. Pioneers would think short sleeves were immodest. LOL!

  13. Fabulous post, Kay. :~)
Tiffany was a beautiful bride, and, yes, at least her dress had straps. So many brides these days wear strapless dresses!
I could never have worn a strapless dress. It would have fallen down. LOL
But I certainly wore short skirts in the 60s and 70s, because I had nice legs then.
The first time I got married, in 1967, I wore my mother's wedding gown. Talk about modest. But I loved the long lily-point sleeves, the heavy cream satin, and the sweetheart neckline.

  14. The header photo is stunning. I thoroughly enjoyed this post! I find that I "sound" like my mom alot when I am having a discussion with Ashton! As for the short skirts, I can remember that once I got to school I could roll the waistband and it would shorten my skirt even more...my parents frowned upon me wearing short skirts!

  15. My daughter does not appreciate my sharing of some of my thoughts...so I learned my lesson about clothes a long time ago...other things are still a work in progress...sigh

  16. I wore mini-skirts to teach in. I think I must have been careful about bending over. I know I was in much better shape.

  17. It is interesting how fashion changes. There were times when my youngest daughter, Kerith, went out that I'd just close my eyes and hold good thoughts that she'd get home in one piece, but it was just a phase that didn't last very long -- and probably because I didn't make an issue out of it. But then I'm surprised at some of the things that I wore as well. Have to admit that my wedding gown was pretty prim -- for me!!
Fun post as always, Kay! Hope your week is going well!

  19. Tif looks lovely in her wedding dress. Mini-skirts must've been in fashion when you wore those Kay.

  20. Tiffany looks beautiful in her gown and liked the pictures of you in your short dress but that was the style then. I am with you, I think women reveal too much in their low cut outfits.

  21. Fun pictures of you guys.

I moved to Israel in 1968 and everyone was wearing mini skirts.
    I hated that fashion.
