Pill Too Big to Swallow

I've always had the worst, absolute worst time swallowing pills. I remember in college when a nurse tried to teach me how to swallow pills. Nothing worked and I think I ended up with a shot.

Several years later, I did manage to learn a trick to get me to swallow pills. I have to fool myself into thinking I'm swallowing food. I'll eat something and in the middle of my meal, I stick the pill in my mouth and swallow. Somehow my throat thinks I'm eating food and will allow the food to go down.

This has worked so well that I've been able to swallow a multivitamin without a problem. When I saw this Ultra Women's Silver vitamin I figured I could do it since I've been taking the Centrum Silver just fine.

Wrong.

The pill is HUGE! They should put a real life size picture on the bottle so you know what you're buying. I've tried and tried, but my throat is absolutely rebelling.

I also tried a pill cutter, but the pill is so fat that cutting it in half doesn't make it small enough.

Art, on the other hand can swallow horse pills just fine. He doesn't even have to trick himself. He just sticks it in his mouth, tilts his head back, takes a swig of water and down it slides! He has decided that rather than waste the rather expensive pills, he would take them.

If people start noticing his voice sounding an octave higher, you'll know why.

  1. My mother in law had a lot of trouble swallowing pills. Whereas I just pop them down. Maybe it has something to do with how big your throat is!

  3. That is a very big pill! I don't have any trouble swallowing pills - I use Art's method. My son-in-law swallows them without any liquid!

  4. I agree about pills, that's why I don't take any vitamins but I NEED to...any suggestions?

  5. I take a Calcium pill that's even larger than the Centrum Silver. What a chore to get it to go down. What are pill manufacturers thinking, anyway?

  6. I could never swallow pills either until I fractured my neck and was flat on back in traction and had no choice. Not a fun way to learn how but it worked. And yeah, big vitamins are a still real pain.

  7. I've always been able to swallow a handful of pills--ooh, that sounds bad doesn't it? You're right though, lots of the multi-vitamins and calcium supplements are big pills. I have to find supplements that don't contain Vitamin K; you'll have to find ones that are small enough for you to swallow. I guess it's good that there are so many choices out there. Good shopping.

  8. No trouble swallowing 3 large pills at the same time with a gulp of water. Of course, it would be better to take 1 pill at a time, but I am the impatient type.

David swallows his dry. After swallowing 6 pills, he will then take a swig of water.

  9. Those are very big pills. I have no problem swallowing pills, so therefore can't identify well with those who can't. I do know, however, it's a miserable experience for those who's throats rebel.

My mother had a hard time with pills, and like a previous commenter said, she did pretty well with milk.

How can we tell what the actual size of the pill is since we can't open the bottle to check it out? Companies should be required to post the actual size of the pill someplace on the box or bottle.

  10. Kay you gave me a giggle with a mental picture of Art taking your Vitamins and also talking with a slightly higher pitched voice-LOL!! My Mom has major problems swallowing pills. Her Dr. said her tongue is alot thicker than the average tongue so that is why the swallowing large pills issue.

  12. My vitamin pills are big, but not that big. Tom and I take the same ones, a Safeway brand like Centrum Silver. I have no trouble unually, but occasionally a non-coated type will feel like it is sticking in my throat. I hate that. My naproxen are like that, so I buff them a bit with my fingers first.

  13. Those are the king of horse pills, I think I would have a problem with them. You know, a long time ago I seem to remember pill cutters. Now whether I have imagined this I am not sure, but have you thought of cutting them in half or even thirds? Would be easy with a pill cutter but I little dangerous with a sharp knife I suppose :(

You can find a pill cutter from Walmart’s right here.

  15. I'm like Art. And the littler pills I don't even need water to swallow. Down they go.

  16. You are too funny!! I have found that with Flo who has had a problem or two with pills...that if after you put the pill in your mouth...use a straw to drink the water that washes it down. It kind of 'sends' everything down the hatch!! Try using a straw and let me know if it is successful.
But seriously, what is wrong with the companies that make pills that size? What are they thinking?

  19. I have never had issues swallowing tablets until my girlfriend offered her Centrum Silver vitamins to me because SHE couldn't get them down without discomfort. Make that two of us. Snapping them in half didn't help so I quartered them. Still hurt going down! Maybe they will aid in the decomposition of my local landfill. I won't be buying these again.
