Injured AGAIN! Arrrghhhh! (or Pain in the Butt!)

Oh for goodness sake! I can't believe it! I am my mother's daughter. Remember when she got her knee injured coming down the stairs and we had to take her to Japan in a wheelchair. She insisted she didn't fall or bang her knee. It just happened.

I believe her.

Yesterday, I was helping Art move a large dresser onto the flooring he had partially laid down. As I lifted one of the drawers from the floor and turned my body at the waist to stand, I felt a shock from below my waist to my left butt. Holey Moley! The pain!

Now I can't bend down without a lot of pain. How in the world can you injure yourself doing almost nothing? Do you realize how many times a day you have to bend? Even going to the bathroom is not fun...well... not that it was fun before, but you know what I mean.

If I need to pick up something from the floor, it's agony. My mother is now having to help me reach for things that are low to the ground. She's finding that a teeny bit humorous. I have to hide my condition from her because she gets so upset if she sees me in any pain.

I have so much to do right now. Doggone it!

POSTSCRIPT: I know it sounds dumb, but it didn't occur to me to take pain killers since I try to stay away from more drugs than I need to take. After reading all your comments I took some Motrin. Wow! It does take the edge off the pain. Thank you, everybody!

  1. Kay, these things happen to the best of us. Go get some serious prescription pain pills, for your sake and your mother's sake. No reason to be a martyr and suffer pain that can be eased until you get better. Please?

  3. Oh, no! I'm so sorry to hear of this, Kay. I know you try to accomplish so much each day, so this injury is a real pain in the...butt. Is it a pinched nerve, perhaps? Those things can be brutal.

  5. pain is never fun, sounds like you could use a visit to a chiropractor to put your back in alignment. It is painful and takes time to work itself back to normal. Stop lifting things and take a long soak in a hot tub.

  6. That is terrible news! It is always best to bend the knees instead of bending from the waist. I am sorry you are in so much pain.

  7. Pain killer. Get on top of the pain because as long as there is pain, there is inflammation and as long as there is inflammation, there isn't healing! A chiropractor might be a good idea, too. I know you're like me and prefer not to see the doc, but sometimes you just have to.

  11. As a veteran of back surgery, be kind to your spine! Never ever bend over to pick anything up! It's a good way to rupture a disk!!!! Anti-inflammatories are best for relief.

  12. BUMMER!! Being pretty much stuck in a power chair or on a scooter outdoors due partly to back pain, I feel for you. What most folks don't realize is that back strains & their relatives are generally due to the cumulative effects of MANY episodes. If you're at the strain point, as little as stooping to a coffee table to get a pen can push it over the top.

Motrin or any form of ibuprofen is good. Tylanol(?) is hard on the liver with extended use. If it lasts more than a few days I'd get an appointment with a 'sports injury' doctor. If they can't help, they can point the way to the proper solution.

  13. I agree with Mike, you need to take some anti-inflammatory medication if it doesn't upset your stomach and then visit a chiropractor. I have a chronic back condition and know just how easy it is to 'tweak' it. Regular visits to a chiropractor have become part of my life, and thank goodness for them, as they've kept me mobile for many years.

  14. I hope you are getting soon better! Once I went to the doctor to see him about an aching back. When I had just arrived I saw that the doctor was suffering from the same kind of back ache, then the door opened and one of the other doctors came in his face contorted with pain. He was bent and had his hand on his hip. He made a joke about it. I only said: "I come for what you both are suffering from..." Anyway apart from painkillers both doctors said that it was best to keep moving. So good luck, Kay! Thanks for your visit!

  16. Oh boy - I'm so sorry to hear you've hurt yourself! And I hope it goes away before too long and you're well again.

You've reminded me of my cousin who spent years and years going to nursing school part-time while raising her kids -- she FINALLY got her degree and went to work, loving every minute. I can't remember if it was weeks or a few months later, but it wasn't long -- she had to help lift a patient from bed and some 'accident waiting to happen' in her spine happened, and left her on disability. All those years, and her career was ended in a moment. I guess the back is a more delicate thing than we realize, until we've hurt it.

I'm glad the Motrin's helping, and also glad your Mom's got a good sense of humor!

  17. I hope you are feeling so much better now! As one who has been through years of back problems and surgeries, take the pain pills as needed. I suffered for years until I ended up having surgery, perhaps if I had taken care of the problem sooner rather than later I wouldn't have had such problems. I have hurt my back stepping out of the shower! My husband hurt his back this weekend loading brush into his Jeep. Take care and sending you good thoughts!
