Modern Make-Over

When we arrived in Illinois, my daughter warned us that the house we lived in for 34 years would look different and she hoped we wouldn't mind. Well, of course we didn't! We were looking forward to seeing how they'd decorated the house.

Most of our furniture came from house sales and our theme was pretty eclectic. Tif says she'd call it more colonial which was in keeping with the feel of our little community.

My son-in-law and daughter have a more modern taste in furnishings. It gave me a little start every time I came down the stairs to see the new look to the place but I really liked it.

We brought the china cabinet and dining room set with us to Hawaii so even though it may look a little out of place here in the islands, it reminds us of our other home.

As I look at these photos, I'm reminded of our time there and can't help but feel the longing to be back there. It's not the furniture that makes the home, but the people you love.

For now, I'm trying to nurse this cold or flu that I have. It hit like gangbusters starting with a little constant headache to coughing and misery. Art says I'm starting to hum in my sleep... when I am sleeping between coughing fits, that is. I'm thinking of sleeping in my office tonight but he thinks he's strong enough to withstand the onslaught of my germs. He says he finds the humming funny.

Uh oh.... did I just hear him cough?

  1. First and most important, GET WELL SOON.

Second, it's so interesting to see your decorating style versus your daughter's in the same space. Yes, we all have our own style.

  2. so, who took the before and after pics? Tif's decorating style is brighter -- there's more light. Did she discard the drapes?

Wish I had a china hutch!

Take care of that bad cold. Hope your ribs don't hurt from the coughing. I've been down that road, too!

  3. Interesting photos. Both decorating styles are nice, but personally, your style is more pleasing. Modern furnishings always give me a little jolt.

    Take care of yourself.

  4. I agree with Linda. Your daughters style is her taste, but for me, I like yours better. It was somehow warmer. Then again, she lives there now, so.... :)

  9. How cool to have your photos to compare the old and new looks. I think as we get older we collect stuff, and can end up with a cluttery look. I know I have to fight that. The modern look is clean and simple. But I do like old stuff!

  10. Yes, do get well soon!! It is interesting to see the differences in us and our children as far as decorating goes. I like what yours have done and I like what mine have done, too. Hope Art stays well and that you're feeling better quickly. I know you miss your kids and KC.

  11. Humming is better than snoring, but I hope you get well soon!

How cool to see the difference in the two decorating styles. The house looks so very different in each. The coolest thing is, no matter the decor, it is a home fuull of love and family history.

  17. I really hope you'll be feeling much better very soon. After all the travelling you've done recently and the many meetings and partings you've you're bound to be at somewhat of a low ebb.
It's lovely to see how your 'old' house looks now and you're absolutely right - it's people that make 'home'.

  18. First off I hope you feel better soon, remember to try rubbing Vicks on the soles of your feet and put socks on top, it helps you sleep really!

I love what they have done with the house, especially their modern art. You're right it's very different to your style, but both ways work, it's what each of us is confortable with.

  19. I like both decorating styles! As you mentioned, its the people who make the home what it is. How lucky Tif and her family can live in the family home. I do hope you are feeling much better!
