Falling

It happened again.

This morning, I was going downstairs to the basement to look for window cleaner when my house slipper caught on the rug or something and I fell like a tree onto the concrete floor. It happened so fast I couldn't catch myself.

I remember feeling my cheekbone and something else in the head area hit the floor and then couldn't get up. I felt like my brain got shaken up in my head and I was afraid to move. I just lay there on my stomach on the cold floor hoping nothing was broken... again.

And then I started thinking. Why did this happen... again? I just broke my foot falling from the chair a few months ago. I fell in the parking lot of Sam's Club a couple of years ago. I fell like a tree then, too and had a big goose egg on my forehead. It was really embarrassing when they called an ambulance!

After a while, I tried to get up and my head swam. I was dizzy and had to stop to steady myself. Art found me a little later sitting on the couch and brought an ice pack for my face. I was worried a bit about head trauma but I didn't have any double vision or anything so I figured I was fine.

I usually don't bruise. However, several hours later, there was a spot on my jaw that was black and blue. My wrist was swollen and discolored. My whole body felt jarred but I was alright. I'll see what it's like tomorrow morning.

I've always heard that when you get to be a "certain" age falls are a major hazard. I never thought it would happen to me!

  1. Kay, I can't believe this...are you in Chicago? Hope nothing's broken.

  2. Oh Kay, so sorry about your pain!
Thank God it wasn't worse and that you were able to get to a place where Art would find you.

Is there a banister on those steps?

Take it easy and be well soon (as soon as possible). Please keep us informed.

I took a dive off a running quarter horse when (stupidly) riding bareback at Heifer Ranch. Hit the hard ground and could hardly breathe or move. Feared I might die alone in a field.
Then some days of the worst body pain I have ever suffered.
So I know how you feel, dear Kay.

  3. Falls can happen at any age. Lisa is still in her twenties, but she has fallen 4 times -- broken collar bone, broken arm, broken ankle, and just weeks ago, a sprained ankle.

What is she aiming for? a career in physical therapy! LOL.

  4. Kay, I just did a paid post the other day that taught me a little bit about this. Have your vision and your ears checked (equilibrium). Be certain to talk to your doctor about this. It is probably nothing but two accidents, even so, better safe than sorry!

Also, be certain to tell him about all of the meds you take -- even OTC -- in case vertigo is a known side-effect.

  5. Oh deary me Kay, what a rotten thing to happen after such a wonderful holiday. I agree with quilly, you really ought to consult your doctor and get some checks done. And for now, have you used some arnica - tablets and cream would both help with the bruising.

  6. Kay, so sorry to hear of your fall. Do you wear glasses? My youngest was always falling over and hurting himself - he fell downstairs at least three times; I don't know how he didn't break his neck - until we discovered he needed glasses, and he was fine after that.

    Feel better soon.

    How's your Mom?

  7. Oh no!! When you said that it happened so fast that you couldn't stop yourself...I had a flashback to my flying leap through the air. At this point in yours[ and mine] falling history, carry a cell phone in your pocket from getting up to lights out!! Have some chocolate, too!

  8. so sorry to hear of your fall. get some sturdier house slippers and slow down. Do check your wrist for fractures or breaks. Hope you are home safely and not still vacationing. At any rate take it easy, we're all praying for your quick recovery.

  9. I am so sorry to hear about this fall...hope you are fine now.I noticed some very good suggestions in the comments above.

I tripped more than three to four times few months back and realized later that it was because of my foot wear (the slippers i was wearing at home)....changed them and thankfully tripping stopped.

  10. I hope you're feeling better now. We don't bounce so well as we grow in maturity (sounds better than 'get older') Take care - and get rid of those slippers!

  11. So very sorry about this. Falling is my great fear at my age. You're too young for this! Hang on to the railings on stairs.

  12. Oh dear Kay, I do hope you are okay and nothing was broken. I am sorry you had to go through this.

  14. Oh, I do so relate. The tumble I took at Epcot in Florida was also such a surprise. The ground was suddenly coming to meet me.

I hope you get well soon and have no lasting damage. Go slowly and carefully.....

  15. Oh no Kay! I'm so glad you didn't break anything. Feel better sweetie!

  16. Oh, I'm so sorry! My sister falls a lot, too. You take care of yourself and heal.

  17. I'm just so glad nothing is broken. If you are still dizzy, you might get checked out for a concussion. Call the doc anyway.

Vision: I found that my bifocals wipe out the bottom half of my world, and because of this I fall but upward. I always hurt my hands and wrists badly. Perhaps there is something you are not seeing that's in your way.

    We sure care.

  18. Oh no, this is not good. So sorry Kay. Hope you feel better real soon.

  19. Christine: Yes, we're still in Chicago. We'll return to Hawaii in June.

Dina: Yes, there's a banister and you caught me, I wasn't holding on to it. I will from now on, that's for sure.

Good gosh! Falling off a horse is a whole lot worse. Thank goodness you were OK.

Gigi: I know it's silly, but that's reassuring to know I'm not the only one.

Quilly: I do have an appointment at Tripler when we return so I will mention it to my nurse practitioner, but I don't think it's my hearing or eyes which have been checked. I think it does have something to do with... sigh... getting older and less coordinated.

Amanda: I've never heard of Arnica cream. Thank you for the tip. Luckily, the bruising is on my hand and under my chin. You can't see it unless you stare.

The Laughing Housewife: I do wear glasses and I wasn't wearing them then. It would have been a worse fall if I were. I don't think that was the problem. I really think it was my rubber house slipper catching on the rug.

My mother is doing fine now... at least that's what she tells me on the phone. My sister-in-law tells me my brother is keeping a good eye on her.

Mare: Yae, Mare! Absolutely right! I will definitely have some chocolate. It makes everything better.

Lin: Thank you, Lin. I really do feel much better today. Thank goodness... since we've got a party tomorrow to host!

Kavita: I do think you're right! I have these same slippers at home in Hawai and find myself tripping there as well. It was never serious enough for me to do anything about it but now I'm thinking, I need to stop wearing these.

jabblog: I agree. Sigh. We really don't bounce back as well do we?

Bobbie: You're right! I have to remind myself to hold on to the stair railing.

Cheryl: Thanks so much! I do feel much better today.

Sylvia: Thank you, Sylvia. I do feel loads better today even with the bruising. KC kept asking to see my "boo boo."

Jo: Isn't it the most awful thing to suddenly feel yourself fall and knowing you're going to hurt something? I had so many thoughts flash through my brain as I was going down.

Sherri: Thanks, Sherri! I'm feeling so much better today.

Janie: I'm hoping to be more careful from now on... hoping, but not totally counting on it.

Maggie: I was surprised to see the big bruise on my hand. That's never happened to me before. I'm thankful nothing broke.

  20. Do you believe in Tiger Balm?

  21. Oh Kay, Kay, Kay...please be so careful. Falls, ouch. I've done a few myself and it is terrifying. Bounced my head on a concrete floor a few years ago and think that is when I messed my back up too. CAREFUL!

  22. Wow. That was a nasty fall. I'm reading this after reading your shopping post, so I guess you are recovering. Thank goodness.
I missed the bottom step on our stairway years ago, went down and messed up my ankle. I was in a cast for 6 weeks. I still get spooked by stairs.

  23. Dina: I haven't used Tiger Balm but I know people who swear by it.

Jill: It's really the hardest thing to anticipate, isn't it? I'm going to try to be careful but sheesh! It's hard.

Linda: I know just what you mean about that LAST step. I've done that also! Luckily that didn't make me go down like a tree... yet.

  24. Oh my goodness -- I'm so sorry to hear about such a fall!

Concrete and stone floors are painful to fall on: I'm glad to hear you're okay but any blow to the head is worrying. I'm glad you did so well at the outlet shopping next day! LOL

I don't think falls are always an age thing : sometimes it's just a luck thing. A friend of mine is recovering now from broken ribs, after falling from a chair when she was hanging curtains.
