The Tree Fell

We returned to Illinois on Tuesday. We're selling our house to our daughter, her husband and granddaughter tomorrow. Today, the tree fell.

We've had this horse chestnut tree for the past 35 years. It was several decades old when we bought our home in 1976. It has been a squirrel haven all this time. We knew the tree had been impacted several years ago and it was a matter of time. The tree people said there was no problem with it falling down even if it completely died. Art had been calling the landscapers all day today to get some estimates on taking it down.

There was a stiff wind today but nothing we were concerned about. We were in the house when we thought we heard "something." We thought it might be KC waking from her nap and jumping down from her bed.

Nope. It wasn't her. Our neighbor across the street came over to tell us. We could not believe our eyes!

We called the city, but they were closed since it was 5:00. We called the emergency number and they asked us if emergency vehicles could pass through. We thought they could but they wouldn't be able to reach the fire hydrant that had been placed there last year.

The fire fighters came over with their chain saws and started sawing the tree limbs right away.

They cleared the hydrant and then cleared the street in case a fire truck needed to park there.

As shocking as this all was, the tree fell away from both houses. It did not hit any cars. It did not hit any people. It did not hit the fire hydrant. It even missed KC's pinwheel.

KC thought she should help.

One of our neighbors stopped by to help us and then gave us the name of some workers who will come to take the tree away tomorrow morning. It's rather an expense but it would have been even more expensive if it was still standing.

In fact, we got to see a lot of our old neighbors today. It was a shock to see the tree fall, but you know... it could have been a lot worse.

Actually, we were very lucky!

  1. Oh Kay, what a miracle it fell in the right direction. (Our tree at Tamaroa fell ON the house.)
The tree must have been waiting for your return, to take leave of you.
Never a dull moment in your travels.

So glad the house stays in the family.

  9. Such a coincidence that the tree fell before you moved house! Could it have suspected that you would leave it ? LOL
Our day began rainy, which was a pity for the queen and her relatives( three sons and their wives, one sister with her husband, their four sons and their wives). They always visit two towns every year. Lateron the sun did an attempt to show his face.

  10. so glad the tree fell 'safely' the other way and it's lovely Tiff and family can buy your house so it stays in the family. I hope one of my kids can do that one day...but you never know.

  14. Awww...I hate it when a big old tree dies. It was really huge. Imagine all the things it observed during its life. Glad no one was hurt.

  15. The neighbors didn't chop the tree up with their own chainsaws? & carry it away for you?

The FIRE BRIGADE had to come & perform a garden chore?

  16. It's amazing that the tree waited until you and Art were there to witness its falling. I love horse chestnut trees, but this one's time had come. Glad no one and no buildings were injured.

  19. What an amazing "event". To have been searching all day for someone to come take it down and then the tree just fell down without anything being damaged! I love the photo of KC cleaning up, she certainly has grown! How nice that your daughter and her family can live in the home she grew up in!

  20. I am so happy that no one was hurt. Right after we sold our house and the young (pregnant) couple moved in, our huge maple tree fell on the house during a bad storm. It went into both floors of the house and just missed the couple sleeping so you were very very lucky....Michelle

  21. The tree probably was expensive to haul away, but if it hit your house it would of been a double expense. Glad no one was hurt. Thank you for coming by.

  22. What an amazing thing - it fell, so harmlessly, as you were planning to take it down? And even missed the tiny pretty pinwheel?

That's the noblest, sweetest tree I've ever heard of.

And you've got *my* kind of luck, that the tree would fall the day before selling it! LOL When I bought my house in WV, huge chunks of siding blew off it in a freak storm, while we were sitting in settlement. Typical luck for me! LOL
