Such a STEAL!

There was an article in the Star Bulletin about a crime of opportunity at the Pearl City Walmart. A man put down his keys for a moment while shopping and a thief stole it, went to the parking lot clicking at cars until he found the right car and drove off in the borrowed BMW. I told Art, "Isn't it crazy that you could put car keys down and not pay attention long enough for somebody to steal it?"

Well.....

Art just reminded me about something that happened at the After Christmas sales. We were at the SAME Pearl City Walmart looking at Christmas tree garlands. It was pretty busy and there was a shopping cart in the way. I wanted to ask the shopper if I could move it a bit but she was busy talking on her cellphone. Therefore, I had to lean over her cart to get to what I wanted to look at it. That's when I looked down and saw her wallet and car keys lying at the bottom of her basket with several bills sticking out. I was dumbfounded! I turned around and she was looking on the other side of the aisle still talking on her cell. I looked at Art and saw that he was surprised to see it, too. I could EASILY have taken her wallet bulging with money and car keys and walked down the next aisle without her knowing.

I wanted to warn her so I waited a few moments to tell her but she was still so busy on her phone that we just had to leave.

Incredible! Some people are such easy pickings!

  1. I know! I can't believe how oblivious people are to stuff like that. They just don't see the whole picture and really totally into themselves. She probably has not ever had anything happen to her to change her prespective.

  2. Fun how your clipart expands the post possibilities. You don't need to worry any more about not having a photo to illustrate your point.

  3. If the lady was THAT oblivious to the world around her, and her wallet, while in a store, just imagine how oblivious she is as she talks on her phone while driving her car. Very scary. And I know those who talk and drive think they have everything under control. They're wrong.

  5. I feel sorry for these people because they *will* get robbed, but on the other hand I'm grateful because they make a thief will hardly need to bother trying to steal from those of us who are more careful.

It's one of those lessons I try to drum into my kids, but I don't know if they've always followed my advice!

  7. Kay, I never let my handbag leave my shoulder because, out of sight is out of mind for me. I've had people walk away with my shopping cart simply because I just don't notice. It's scary out there and it sounds like Walmart is the worst place.

  8. The new clip art is lovely! I may just have to look into that as well. Anyhow, I too have noticed people walking away from their carts (like half an aisle or even further) and leaving purses in them. I keep my purse right in front of me in the cart and zipped shut. My daughter has a very bad habit of leaving her purse wide open and wandering off...will show her this post as she wouldn't believe her own mother!

  9. Indeed! It goes to one of the tenets of my personal philosophy: God must have loved idiots because he made so many of them. And that includes me because I got my purse and keys and cellphone (i.e., my life) stolen last summer because I wasn't paying attention.

  10. Yeah, INCREDIBLE! Someone could also kidnap an infant from a cart.

  11. I sat my purse down in a Portland bookstore to look at a book and it was gone in a flash. There I stood penniless to ride the light rail home, no cell phone, etc. It was awful.

We'd just moved to Portland so I went to DMV to get my license changed from Texas to Oregon. Two weeks later I received a jury summons. Two years later I received a jury summons.
Do I deserve to be punished by jury duty for being lax and losing my purse? Never again! I don't carry a purse downtown. I carry only identification and a credit card zipped in a pocket of whatever I am wearing. Around my neighborhood I keep a death grip on my purse.

  12. I tend to keep my wallet and important stuff on my body when I go in such stores. Being robbed is horrid -- and it is ten times more distressing when one realizes that a little thought could have prevented it!

  14. thieves always keep their eyes on preoccupied people. It's not as random an act as it would seem to appear.

  15. I is amazing how many people just seem to walk around with their head -- somewhere other that where it should be. I keep a tight hold on my purse and keys.

Like your clip art. I went on Google, typed in clip art and got some really terrific pictures and it was free, so now I have something else to play with!

  17. People on cell phones, either talking or texting, can be so annoying that I almost wish they would have to be taught a lesson by having something stolen. But obviously they usually get away with being oblivious to those around them.

  18. Incredible to think how careless people are in this day and age, with all of the warnings we are given. I could understand it if she was old - just before Christmas we were in Aldi and an old lady left her open bag on the shopping trolley. Paul and I told her separately about it and then later, we heard her saying to another person, 'Oh, I've already been told that twice by other people,' so she must have done it again. I think most of us are basically honest, thank goodness; but it only takes one opportunist thief to ruin an old lady's Christmas.

Jean made an excellent point about your lady - I wouldn't like to be behind her in a car.

  19. I agree alot of people don't pay attention. I hate to keep blaming cell phones, but so many people are too busy yacking on their phone or texting these days!

  20. I know what you are talking about, today at the store we encountered three different baskets with open purses and the ladies were no where near their carts. Hope you had a nice Christmas and wishing you a Happy New Year.
