Thinking Green With Michelle

Michelle of Rambling Woods--Taking the Road Less Traveled has given out Green Thinker Awards. She asks everyone to pass on the message to think green.

"All I ask is that one post be devoted to how you try to take care of the planet by living green and being more environmentally conscious. Do you recycle, eat more local foods, avoid plastic bags to name a few. Grab the award and link back to Rambling Woods."

Do we recycle? Definitely! Plastic bottles, aluminum cans, glass, newspapers, office paper all go into our recycle bin.

Do we eat more local foods? We do go to the farmers markets every week and try to get locally grown food when we can.

Avoid plastic bags? I did a post about my ecobags that I carry with me all the time. It reduces the amount of plastic bags I would collect. When I do receive plastic bags, I save them to be reused.

We also reduce the amount of water we use by turning off the water when we soap ourselves during our showers. We turn the water back on to rinse ourselves off.

We use CFL bulbs, ceiling fans most of the time instead of air conditioners and have installed a lot of insulation in our walls and ceilings to keep the house cooler. We recently bought a Prius! I nearly forgot that one.

Thinking green is especially easy since Art worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. We still have more things we can do, and we will eventually. I hope everybody else does, too.

Please accept this award and tell us how you think green also.

  1. Wow, this is one after my own heart. I'll post something today.

Meanwhile, I was just saying to someone that I wish all our re-usable bags weren't so ugly: our supermarkets charge €1 for one and they're great, but emblazoned with their own logos, and just bleh.

I've got lots of leftover upholstery fabric and bias tape however, so will make a few nicer ones I think! Also some curtains I hate and wouldn't mind 'recycling' LOL

    Thanks Kay!

  2. Isn't it great sometimes to list what we do that's 'green', it really feels as if we are doing something toward improving/saving the planet. I do most of the things you list, except there's no way I'm going to turn off the water in the shower whilst I soap myself. It's just too cold here, even in the summer, to cool down like that. Sorry!

  3. When I went to school, an almost foolproof way to pick country kids from town kids was that the town kids would invariably leave the water running while they cleaned their teeth or did their hair.

Some of these "green" things are just common sense & instinct.

  4. Congratulations Kay...a well deserved award. We too use jute bags here and home made cloth bags, plastic was once completely banned here but again retailers won this issue against the state gov..Recycling is not as organized here in our country like yours but we do try our best. The other day my son asked one of our night staying guest to close the tap while brushing and to use a cup instead...we grow a lot of greens in our kitchen garden and my husband plants a new sapling whenever he could and he involves our kids too.

  5. Kay, you do alot of "green" things in your life which is wonderful! I work for a Commercial Construction company and we are know for being LEED ("green") builders. We are getting ready to put a "living roof" on one of our projects in a few months. The roof is made up of succulents which trap alot of the rain water and this keeps all that water from going into the sewer system in Charlotte! Keep on being "green"!

  8. I really enjoy looking what people have to post about Thinking Green. You're great at recycling Kay, a role model for us all. I do my part and recycle whenever we can. A very well deserved award, congratulations.

  9. Terrific post, Kay, Congratulations on the award! I have a stack of cloth bags and use them whenever I shop. We recycle everything!! Or at least it seems that way because we actually have very little "garbage" left to be picked up. We don't need air conditioning even in the summer. And we use those energy saving light bulbs -- good thing, too, because it's pitch dark here by 4:30 pm and doesn't get light again until after 8 am! We both are always looking for more ways and fortunately, Seattle is a very big on recycling and energy efficient help.

  10. Great post, Kay! As soon as I have time I'll write a post about it. Yes I recycle paper, plastic and kitchen waste. On my roof I have solar panels. I now that we can never do enough.

  11. I have a solar water heater and use those fluorescent light bulbs, which, however, do NOT last 9 years as stated on the package. They last a year or LESS!

  12. I use the special light bulbs -- Gigi is right, they don't last like they claim to. We recycle, of course the city makes that very easy. Amoeba often commutes to work on his bicycle. I also turn the water off while soaping & shampooing, but probably won't when we move to Washington State where it's colder.
