I got a call AGAIN from the Star Bulletin newspaper. This time they were offering me a year's worth of Monday to Sunday newspapers delivered for $50.00. We already subscribe to the Honolulu Advertiser. However, we met a Star Bulletin editor and reporter at Gigi's Blog party so I thought we'd better give it a try since they are really, really struggling to not go under. We got our first paper on Wednesday morning. Right off the bat, Art found something humorous. One of the front page titles for the Advertiser read: Teachers balk at furlough plan. The Star Bulletin's read: Teachers Willing to return for furlough days.
And here's what else I noticed without reading much (anything).
The Star Bulletin has a larger crossword puzzle so I don't have to strain my eyes to write in the little squares. However, the crossword clues are hard (more challenging)and they only have one. The Advertiser has two crosswords. One is for the non Mensa people like me. I could almost do it with a pen. The other is for really, really smart people. There are days that I can't get one single clue. Sigh... now you know.
The Star Bulletin is more like a big newsprint magazine in format and its smaller size. There are no sections like the Advertiser. It would be easier to read on a train if we had a train in Hawaii.
They have different comics.
The Advertiser has a LOT more advertisements. Hmmmm.... Is that why it's called the Advertiser?
Well, that's all I have for opinions on that. When my mother is feeling 100%, perhaps I'll have more time to actually read an article.
All that comes to mind is how much paper you guys have to worry about recycling. But have fun with them.
ReplyDeleteFunny differences.
Be well, Mama san.
Kay -- there was a time when I couldn't start my day without the paper. Now it is the internet. I'm afraid I may be one of the reasons newspapers aren't faring well. I changed my allegiance.
ReplyDeleteI used to love the newspaper, but now we live too far away to pick one up every day and so we just do without. After a while we didn't miss it at all, and the local news shows up in iGoogle so I'm not too 'out of the loop'.
ReplyDeleteCrossword puzzles speak their own language. My mother did them every day to keep her mind exercised, but I'm terrible at them, and feel embarassed at leaving them mostly unfinished LOL.
I got the daily paper for years, then I got a computer! Need I say more??? So, we don't take the newspaper and get our news off the computer, saves a lot of recycling and here in Seattle we do tons of that as it is -- and I'm glad we do. Like Susan I'm lousy at crossword puzzles and am usually leave them unfinished, too
ReplyDeleteHope your Mom is feeling better soon!
Have a great Friday, Kay!

Hey, Kay, welcome to the club! I subscribe only to the Star-Bulletin, because the writing is better than the Advertiser. I read the Advertiser online, only.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, the S-B published more of my articles than did the Advertiser, so of course I am biased...
so if you had a train in Hawaii, you'd definitely go with 'the Star'? lol
ReplyDeleteI still get the newspaper, but they are all struggling, I think even TV is struggling against the internet
Hope your mom is feeling better. As for the newspapers we are a divided household here as I read the on-line news and Mark buys a newspaper. I think the internet has contributed to newspapers downfall but since hubby buys a paper I don't feel as guilty!
ReplyDeletewe get two newspapers=local and state and that pretty much keeps us going plus cnn online.
ReplyDeleteWe get the USA Today and the Bloomington Pantagraph. A while back we cancelled the local paper.
ReplyDeleteI didn't think that I would miss it, but I did! When a sales person called and offered the paper for $8.99 for 13 weeks.( we paid $25 dollars in the past ) we re-. subscribed. I really missed it.
Hope your Mom is feeling better very soon!
I love my puzzles too!
Seriously? No trains in Hawaii?
ReplyDeleteHow is Mom? Better, I hope!
ReplyDeleteI only get the Sunday paper these days. I read 3-4 newspapers online and I also do crosswords and sudokus online. It works for me.
I do mourn the demise of print journalism but I guess that time marches on.
Interesting post, Kay. Sure hope mom feels better soon.
ReplyDeleteAloha, Friend!

Newspapers are going under left and right. Hubby does the Times puzzle online now...
ReplyDeleteInteresting comparing the two papers that way. Our Seattle paper went under so we had no choice but to switch to the other. I still miss things about the old paper.
