This reminds me of that acronym IAEF,RTFM! When Art had just left the Air Force many years ago where he worked on satellite systems, he told me the officers used that acronym constantly and it meant, "If All Else Fails, Read The F(expletive deleted) Manual." When he worked with computers at EPA he says he was forever asking people who came to him if they had read the manual. My son-in-law complains of the same thing.Well... I'd been getting along just fine pointing and shooting, but I see that if I'd read the manual before, there is a whole lot more I could learn on how to operate it. I guess I'll spend the next few days reading it. Who knows, maybe I'll learn something else.
I know that acronym! I shouldn't tell you thins, but when Thom came to me with his camera, I had him bring the manual, too. He said the manual wasn't any good because it didn't have a table of contents. I opened it to the back and showed him where the index was. Then he snatched the book away from me and said, "You've got to be kidding!" Followed by some VERY naughty words!
ReplyDeleteI never read the manual for anything. David, on the other hand, loves to read it as if it were an exciting novel.
ReplyDeleteOh i love reading manuals be a simple food grinder or a new printer or a new toy and i have a special drawer with lock system where i keep all of such things..one of my friend had no idea that her mixie can shred cabbage in no time until i mentioned it to her ....when i don't understand something from the manual i always ring up my brother so he is my human manual.Good-luck with your manual reading and yes thanks for that acronym...interesting info.lol
ReplyDeleteI do read the manuals. I taught myself to sew with my new machine two years ago by making a sample of everything in the manual. I refer back to my camera manual every once in a while to figure out how to do something I don't do very often.
ReplyDeleteI wish my mini lap top had come with a better manual. Maybe I wouldn't have had to send it to Texas twice already for repairs!
I always thought it was a male thing. My husband likes to fiddle with his new toys and discover them for himself, then read the manual at a later date, to see what he might have missed.
ReplyDeleteLove the new photo!
The men in my life are completely different. My DH never reads the manual and never gets beyond very basic use of any gadget; Number One Son never reads the manual and works everything out without ever needing the manual, and then sorts everyone else out; Number Two Son doesn't bother with gadgets and if he absolutely needs to he just asks everyone else how it works! Me - I read enough of the manual to get going, then go back to it later when I need to know more.
ReplyDeleteKay, my son-in-law showed me some things on my camera that I wasn't using and I've had my camera over a year now! I love the features he showed me! Enjoy figuring out the camera!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that acronym! I am amused to hear it's the men in your family who say it. In my family, it seems the men never want to bother with instructions. think they know it all.
ReplyDeleteIt's such fun to get a new toy to play with. And yes, manuals are extremely useful.
Congratulations on such a cute new camera! Reading manuals isn't half so exciting as playing with a new toy, though is it? That's my downfall -- but I do go back to the manual eventually. I couldn't believe what my camera could do when I finally looked into it; I'd been missing out on a lot.
ReplyDeletegood luck with that manual, Kay, it's the right thing to do! But it doesn't look like fun.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way about computer software. I need a teacher to show me, I can't understand from just reading the manual or the help screens. Unfortunately my techy son lives 5 hours away but my hubby reads every page of the manual but won't ever ever ask for directions when lost. lol!
ReplyDeletewow..a camera..that's good..
ReplyDeleteI didn't know those little cameras had a macro setting. I will have to look at the little one I carry in my purse. I am not good with reading manuals either...and most of the time they are written poorly.. Michelle
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute camera! I'm glad you like to read instructions. I'm sure you will learn some cool stuff that it will do. Me, on the other hand, HATES to read manuals!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful day! Love the new picture you son took!
Yep, love the acronym! I have been reading my manual since I got my new camera several months ago and with some help from my son David when he was here. He's the one who got me to try macro shots and it's been a lot of fun. You've commented on that white rose that I post now and then on my Evening post, that was my first real try and I love it!
ReplyDeleteFun and games ahead!!
Enjoy!
Sylvia
Yep. If they didn't have the manuals they would have the information somewhere else. I find most stuff online these days.
ReplyDeleteI remember when we used to buy computer programs and they came with manuals as thick as the Holy Bible and god wouldn't help us if we lost it.
Can't wait to see your pictures, Kay.
ReplyDeleteAloha, Friend!
Comfort Spiral
I've always held off reading the "fm" until absolutely necessary. I'm the same way when I sew: I look at pattern pictures but hate to give in a read the directions. I could save myself serious stress and time if I'd only read the "fm" to start with.
ReplyDeleteManuals...ugh! I am not very dood at that. Good luck,Kay
ReplyDeleteHaha, I know just what you mean.
ReplyDeleteI'm always amazed by all those details in the camera manual that I had learned to do without.
Some basic things, like macro and deleting, are just not explained well either.
Point and shoot, that's for me.
Enjoy your new camera.
