One thing we've noticed about the Prius is that it's got a big dashboard surface that heats up and then radiates to the rest of the car. I can actually feel the heat even with the air conditioning on unless I put the fan on full blast. This is Hawaii. It's hot over here. We always use a wind shield shade to keep out as much of the sun as we can when it's in a parking lot. It really helps! I'm surprised everybody in Hawaii doesn't have a shade for their car.
I'm seeing a few people putting a little rug like cover on their dashboards. I wonder if this helps. Do you suppose the rug thing will absorb the heat and not radiate it? We're trying to drive as ecologically as we can without using the air conditioning full blast but this Hawaiian heat is terrible.
This week, it's also extremely, horribly humid AGAIN! Arrrrghhhhhh!
meanwhile, I dread seeing my HECO bill next month. The a/c has been on constantly, even at night.
ReplyDeleteOther than that heat thing, are you liking your Prius?
ReplyDeleteGigi: We don't use our air conditioning much but I did this afternoon. I wish we'd installed air conditioning in our diningroom. Big mistake!
ReplyDeleteJanie: Yes, we do love our Prius. It works great and really saves on gas. It does teach you how to drive ecologically and economically.
I think people put rugs or coverings on their dashboards to save them from cracking with the heat. Cute windowshades. I'm sure most of us would trade a little heat now that it's cooling off here but humidity? no thanks...
ReplyDeleteJeez, JB's going to be commenting about getting solar panels that power fans in the car soon. :)
ReplyDeleteLin: The humidity is what's getting all of us.
ReplyDeleteTif: That solar powered thing was just to keep the car at ambient temperature while parked. It also costs between $2,000. to $4,000. more. No thank you.
Cute shades...we use ac because it is pretty hot and humid too here,if we open the windows hot air touching the body gives that feel that we are inside a steam sauna and that's very uncomfortable. These kind of shades are used by many out here....i think we have more or less similar weather like yours.
ReplyDeleteKavita: A steamy sauna? Yup! That's what it felt like today. The nights are a lot cooler, thank goodness.
ReplyDeleteOur car has AC but we've never used it, having the window open provides enough cooler air on even the hottest day. I'm afraid I should hate the heat and humidity that you have in Hawaii. I love your banner picture though, it looks quite cool and tranquil in the park.
ReplyDeleteThe rug sounds worth a try; it would probably absorb a lot less heat than a black plastic dashboard.
ReplyDeleteBut Kay I so *want* your heat! I've already got the humidity--raining again today. Some warmth to go with it would be so nice.
I'm glad we escaped the humidity when we were in Hawaii in September!
ReplyDeleteI see a lot of Priuses on the roads here. They're definitely a popular car. Have you figured out what you get for mileage?
it's hot in malaysia too n i alays use the sun shade for my car..
ReplyDeleteLove your butterfly shade.
ReplyDeleteYes I am going to be commenting about the fan. Thanks for beating me to it Tif.
ReplyDeleteThe cost of the fan was pretty much the same as the back up camera right?
How often do you use that?
Wouldn't keeping the car at ambient temp while parked in the sun prevent your problem?
It's raining, it's pouring here today. We need to use the heater in the car now. But I do like my four seasons.
ReplyDeleteIt's admirable of you to be ecologically responsible, but being comfortable is also important. And maybe it's time to plan another winter trip to Chicago!
How is the driving coming along Kay? I too have noticed alot of Prius' on the roads. I like your sun shades.
ReplyDeleteAmanda: Sometimes, opening the window is just not enough because of the heat and humidity.
ReplyDeleteSusan: This is a case of Be Care What You Wish For. No, no... you don't want humidity AND heat. Arrghhh.... It's like sitting in a sauna. I get a headache sometimes.
Jean: I think we're averaging about 48 miles per gallon right now. (If Art is driving.)
wenn and Bobbie: I do love our sunshades.
Anonymous Jon: The cost probably was pretty close, I think. We do use our back-up camera a lot. The navigation system we haven't exactly figured out how to use yet. We'll be going to our class in December to learn about that stuff.
About Mungo... Did Sarah tell you how I suggested Mungo Kone? (It sounds like Mondo Cane which was a 60's movie that means "A Dog's World?" Then you could use your Kone Malian name that Sarah liked.
If not... yes Mungo Ghost Dog is fine. LOL
Linda: We're planning to go to Chicago in spring this time. I want to see my cherry tree blooming in the backyard.
Cheryl: Don't tell my kids who are really wanting me to get back to learning to drive. I haven't driven in a week. Sigh... We've been doing too much of this and that. Art promised that we'll go out today.
I couldn't stand the humidity and might have problems with the heat but today here in Ohio at 3:20 pm it is 63 degrees F with a breeze. The sun is out bright. A perfect day.
ReplyDeleteOur car is in the garage all day and doesn't get hot.
Kay, I don't have a window cover but our car is usually in the carport under a roof. Light colored cloth covers do deflect heat and stop the car from absorbing it.
ReplyDeleteIn Vegas I had the dashboard window shade and the shades on sticks on their side windows. They made a huge difference.
That same weather is coming our way. Not looking forward to it. I can´t imagine NOT using the AC´s in that weather!
ReplyDeleteI love the new picture on your header. Looks like fun!
Abraham: We keep our car in the garage also which is fine but when we're in the parking lot the car heats up in seconds.
ReplyDeleteQuilly: Hmmmm... I'll bet shades on the side windows would be great, too!
Betty: Thanks, Betty. I'm not a great camper but my son, Jon and Sarah just love to go camping.
Hello Kay..I came to catch up. Love little KC making like Daddy with her own little laptop. I wanted to mention that both of my step-grandchildren had a virus(last week) that started with hives. The pediatrician said that it was going around. Lucky if they were able to get the HIN1 as there aren't any to be had here. Reducing the school year seems so short-sighted that I couldn't believe it when I heard it on the news.... Michelle
ReplyDeleteMichelle: Parents are very upset right now but it's a done deal over here. It's pitiful!
