Halloween!

Michelle of Rambling Woods posted a terrific explanation on the origins of Halloween. Stop by and check it out. The National Geographic video really does a great job of giving you the history of the holiday.

I always had the hardest time picking a costume for Halloween. More often than not, I was a witch... a nice witch, a pink haired witch, a warty witch, a plain ol' witch.

Other teachers were a lot more creative than I was.

The kids took Halloween very seriously but I always reminded them to brush their teeth and not eat too much of their candies at one time. I wonder just how many heeded my warnings.

I hope the four bags of candy I bought for tomorrow is enough. How many bags did you buy?

  1. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

    I love your pink-haired witch!

I must admit this is one of those rare days a year that I wished we lived in a city; there's no trick-or-treating here. We're going to a party instead and I baked cookies, and will bring some healthy snacks too, but that's about it.

Usually the celebrations here are fireworks; it's the old New Year, and the kids have been out of school all week. I can't wait for Monday! LOL

  3. We don't celebrate Halloween anymore, so no candy. Kids don't come to our door. When we lived in a condo, that's when the kids came and we always distributed candy. Those days are over, sad to say.

  4. Happy Halloween!! There are literally NO children in our neighborhood and most parents here in Seattle plan parties for the kids rather than run the risk of things happening along the trick or treat routes. It's sad, my kids always enjoyed dressing up in the costumes that I made for them each year and the neighborhoods were friendly and fun.

    Hope you guys have fun!

  5. interesting that so many dress up as witches. We had a halloween potluck tonight with costumes optional but no treats or trickers tomorrow as it's an adult only community

  6. I made my self a dress of butcher paper and a crown from gold Christmas garland, and attended the school Halloween as The Paper Bag Princess. The kids loved it -- especially since I could be guaranteed to read the book to anyone who would listen.

  7. The shops try very hard to promote Halloween here in the UK, but it hasn't really taken off much. In our last home the only 'trick or treaters' were teenagers, and I declined to answer the door to them. I don't know if anyone in our new village does anything or not, but I rather doubt there will be more than a few isolated parties, if that.

I'm glad we don't have Halloween in Israel.

  10. Love your pictures, and your pink haired witch.

    Happy Halloween, Kay!

We have few trick or treaters here, but I bought a little candy for those who show up.

  11. We've lived at our current home for eleven years, and we've yet to have a single trick-or-treater. As you might guess, we live in a very rural area, so kids go to nearby towns, to the affluent neighborhoods in those towns, to hit the bonanza.

  12. I must confess that I never allowed my children to T or T. It is still seen as an American import here so it's not massively popular except with retailers; though it is growing. Apart from the clash it has with my Christian views, it seemed ridiculous to me that we spend 364 days a year telling our kids not to take sweets from strangers and on the 365th we send them out to ask for sweets from strangers. I'm not a fan!

  17. In my 32 years of living where I do I have only had three or four trick-or-treaters, only because they were relatives! We live 6 miles from town so that is why. However, my husband always buys "just a few bags of Halloween candy just in case someone comes by" each year! I used to give the children who did come coins along with candy and they loved it! I would take my 3 to their grandmothers and aunts only, I never believed in letting them go all over the place as some do.

  18. Happy Halloween, Kay! I haven't seen much of it here in the Netherlands, but I heard in the news it's getting more popular now.
Thank you so much for your very kind comment. We have a lot in common. War is awful. It's always started by men at the top. I don't hate Japanese. The ones we saw during the war, were soldiers and soldiers will be cruel. They still are: every where in the world they are trained to kill, no matter what nationality they are. It's sad indeed that mankind will never be wiser. Thanks again for your thoughtful comment.

  19. We usually get a few, but tonight it was cold, rainy, and windy with few kids out & virtually all were older, so we just decided not to give candy. Good decision as we got not a single little candy seeker. Besides, I've assured Shirley that the Old Injun will properly dispose of the undistributed treats;)

  20. My house was full of celebrants last night as the kids prowled the freezing neighborhood -- coming home with pillowcases filled with stuff to eat -- candy.

Like imagination...I wrote about on my blog.

    Nowadays there are no "tricks."

Gosh we had tricks when I was growing up. The idea was to put the fear or God into people, poor as they were, and they would hand out treats rather than get a trick pulled on them. Some were nasty.

  23. I never really did costumes as a teacher - very uncreative. I do it now for the grandkids.
