Art and my mom have lovely, easy conversations. However, I know that each understands about 75% of what the other says. Still, that missing 25% can be crucial. The problem is that my mother mixes Japanese in with her pidgin English and Art will occasionally use English word combinations that she doesn't understand.
Last night, I heard mom tell Art, "I just saw on TV it's Feelies."
"What?" said Art. I saw him shake his head in puzzlement.
"Feelies and Young Kids, yeah?" explained Mom helpfully.
"Young Kids?" I could see Art struggling through all the things this could be about.
Finally I had to step in while I could still talk. I could hardly stop laughing. "She means the Phillies and Yankees. It's something she saw in the Japanese news."
"Yes," she said, "The World Cereals."
Hi Kay! This is funny. I had no idea where your mom was going with this. Poor Art:o)
ReplyDeleteSo does your mom have a favorite team? Mine is the 'young kids'. Lisa
hahaha! I can't stop laughing. Hilarious!
ReplyDeleteAwww...must be fun to overhear some of their "conversations" at times. Good thing you stepped in!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love it!!! I can only imagine the giggles you get from listening to them talk! So funny!
ReplyDeleteHave a great day, Kay!!
Sylvia
Sweet, you're Mom was trying to talk sports with her son-in-law!
ReplyDeleteShe must really love him!
I love it!
ReplyDeleteFUN POST....the best thing to do before i retire to bed ..laugh my heart out.How Cute !!!
ReplyDeletefunny, brings a big smile to my face. thanks for sharing...
ReplyDeleteVery funny! Laughter is the best medicine! God bless!
ReplyDeleteThis is too funny, Kay. I love it.
ReplyDeleteSomething I've wondered is...do you also speak Japanese?
the good part is they get along and actually try to communicate! you know, mother in laws and son in laws. cute.
ReplyDeleteI'm not that much of a laugh out loud person, but this did it!
ReplyDeleteIt's a good thing they have you around to interpret.
Oh this is so wonderful! And I love Art for trying! I taught English as a second language for years and I know just how this feels -- and how much fun it is if one keeps the right perspective.
ReplyDeleteWonderful! I'd rather watch the World Cereals to be honest LOL.
ReplyDeleteSome of my nieces and nephews speak Irish first before English, but my Irish isn't too good, so I sympathise with your Mom and Art -- I love talking with the kids but sometimes it's like working a puzzle!
Lisa: My mom is for the "Young Kids" also because of the Japanese player Hideki Matsui. Art says we're supposed to be rooting for the Phillies because of Shane Victorino of Maui.
ReplyDeleteGigi: It's hard to keep a straight face over here sometimes.
Cheryl: I do spend a bit of time over here translating and "clarifying."
Sylvia: So true, so true.
Peggy: She really does love Art. He's her favorite son-in-law. OK... he's her only son-in-law but he'd be a favorite if she had many.
Bobbie: Me, too!
Kavita: Laughter is the best way to start the day. :-D
Lin: Here's smiling back at you, Lin. :-)
Mare: No kidding! You are the best example of always looking at the bright things in life.
Jean: I do speak some Japanese. I've had to. If somebody who can't speak Japanese were to listen to me they'd think I was fluent. However, if a Japanese person were to hear me they'd wonder what the heck I was doing destroying their language. My mom always told me to speak Japanese to family members who love me unconditionally but to speak English in Japan.
Christine: You're right! It's great that they are always trying to communicate and never let the language barrier prevent their exchange of ideas.
Linda: I'm thrilled that it gave you a hearty laugh.
Quilly: Oh yes! It's always a lot of fun over here.
Susan: I have to admit that when we started watching Once we had a hard time getting past the Irish accent. I know people have a hard time with the Hawaiian-English pidgin over here, too. I love all the different accents. They all conjure up exotic places.
ReplyDeleteThat is beautiful.
ReplyDeletethat's interesting..
ReplyDeleteOh gosh...this prompted a belly laugh... and I needed one....
ReplyDeleteLOL here. I can identify from my work with the hispanics here. Learning a new language/culture is an often humorous adventure!
ReplyDeleteOh Kay, that was priceless! I was as lost as Art was. How funny! That's one to remember.
ReplyDeleteLOL! Wonderful!
ReplyDeleteNo matter what, it's good that they can be good buddy as the pic shows!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking fuzzy catapillars! She is too funny!
ReplyDeleteOh Kay, thank you so much for the LAUGH!!! Today is my "off-day", and feeling down in the dumps. And, then I read your blog! Gee, that is too cute! I'm glad that y'all 3 have eachother to communicate through! How sweet! :)
ReplyDeleteHaha, good one.
ReplyDeleteThat 25% must be difficult sometimes.
