Still Looking for a Bedroom Set

Our daughter, Tiffany was kind enough to go out to the Home Decorators show room in Chicago today to look at the Mino bedroom set we'd ordered on-line. We were willing... in our aggravation of not finding something we like in Hawaii... to pay the horrendous 75% shipping fee.

Unfortunately, the Home Decorators people said we had to order the set before we could find out if the vendor could ship to Hawaii. They said not to worry if we didn't like it because they would give us the option to accept or decline once they figured out the final cost and whether it could even be sent.

We ordered. Once we found out it could be sent to Hawaii we sent Tiffany out to look at it.

Then they told us that it may already have been sent.

What?

We called and e-mailed and they said that once they know the cancellation of the order has gone through, they would refund our money. Uhhhhhh?

Tif took several photos and at first we thought it looked pretty but then she focused on the details that showed rather poor workmanship that you couldn't see from the set pictured on-line.

The on-line set boasted English dovetailing. As you can see by this photo Tif sent, there's no dovetailing at all.

The drawers could only open seven and a half inches!

There were also no track glides so Tif said the drawers could not open and shut smoothly.

So there you have it.... back to furniture shopping.

And let's hope we get our money back without any trouble.

P.S. I just got an e-mail message reassuring me that Home Decorators.com has cancelled the order and would be crediting our account. Phew! That's a relief!

  1. I actually know a little bit of what you are going through. We are looking for a double bed for our guest bedroom and can´t seem to find one we like or looks like we imagine.
    It can be so frustrating!
I hope you get your money back too!

  2. We have had our oak veneer triple dresser and 2 night stands for as long as we have been married -- 29 years. Still in good condition. We don't plan to replace them.

We bought the set at Home World.

  3. Wow. What a screwing! I guess you will have to get yourself a Japanese bed, roll it up and put it in the closet. I can't even think of the name of it. For most it would be super modern and you could forget the dovetails.

Thanks for visiting my blog Pick a Peck of Pixels and for the comment you made about my illustrations.

  5. Now that I think about it, I've bought furniture twice without actually seeing it and it was a disappointment I'm still living with! It seems to make such a difference to see and touch exactly what you're buying.

  6. what a challenge-you guys give new meaning to the word SHOPPING. Have you thought about having some furniture made there in Hawaii?

  7. it takes some time to really get the ones that we like..

  8. We've had our bedroom set for almost 40 years, and I don't want to replace it. That's why I'm so interested in your bedding blogging. The kind of mattress you buy determines what kind of bed you have to have. I haven't even begun to try to mattress shop yet.

  9. Whoa, that's scary that they already charged you for it! Do double check with someone with authority there, and get it in writing. Communication in these places aren't always the best. I hope your credit gets confirmed! Good Luck!

  10. Wow, what a pain. I'm glad you got the refund issue sorted at least!

Tif's a darling for taking so many photos and knowing what to think of, like the drawer openings. What a help that is in deciding. I never liked mail-order for that reason; the real thing can't always live up to our hopes!

Good luck finding the next one! Lin's got a great point... perhaps there's a furniture maker or even a talented cabinetmaker/carpenter there in Hawaii who'd be glad of a commission?

  11. Who would have thought it would be this hard to find and order a bed! I really hope Kay you can find one right there in Hawaii, even though I know you and Art having been looking. How mixed up that company was to send it without you asking them too. Hope you get a credit to your account really soon! Good Luck my friend!

  12. First I have to say you have a wonderful "furniture agent" in your daughter and of course, KC! I was so impressed by how thorough Tif was in checking out the set. She certainly saved you a lot of grief. I do hope you get just what you want and soon!

  14. I came because you are on the Random Dozen blog roll, yet I do not see the Random Dozen meme. I stayed because you are in Hawaii and so I am. Also, I see a few of my friends in your blogroll.

My love and I have lived two years with minimal furniture because we do not like what we found in Hawaii -- or if we do approve the furniture we can't approve the price. That said, we did buy a Wo & Sons mattress and we have never had a more comfortable bed! (We still have no bedroom set).

  15. Betty: Thank goodnesss we got our money back. I let them know about the fact that their actual furniture does not have the dovetailing that their on-line ad shows.

Gigi: It has been no fun AT ALL to have to hunt for furniture all over again after all these years.

Abe: I know just what you mean. It's all a futon bed I believe. Then I'd have to get tatami floors and I'd STILL need dressers, etc. :-)

Kavita: I am triple blessed that Tiffany caught the problem and could tell us about it. I'm not buying any more furniture on-line. I've learned my lesson.

Christine: I agree completely. I don't want to buy anything else unless I actually touch it first.

Lin: We looked into having just a set of doors for a cabinet hand built in Hawaii. The estimate was $900.00. Thank goodness we found the small doors at Home Depot for $200.

Wenn: I feel like it's going to take us FOREVER!

Linda: Sometimes I feel like we're living parallel lives. :-)

Dez: You're right! I'd better make SURE we do get our refund credited. Sheesh!

Susan: Sigh... I know except that I've just told Lin that it would probably cost us 3 to 4 times the price to do that.

Sherri: Once we get this bedroom project done, I'll be screaming from the rooftop! It'll be our last major moving from the mainland expenditure.

    I think.

Cheryl: I just talked to Tif on Skype and thanked her a million times over for helping us with this.

Janie: We'll definitely keep up the hunt...

Quilly: It's so nice to meet you Quilly! I've seen you commenting on Susan's blog. We did go to C.S. Wo but their furniture was ornate for us. Thank goodness we at least have our mattress. I wonder how much longer before we get that bedroom furniture. It's anybody's guess.

Now I'm off to visit your blog.
