More Fires Cooking Around Here!

We were heading back from the Waikele Outlet Mall and couldn't understand why there was such a big traffic jam.

Not again. Smoke in the distance. The traffic jam was because the Honolulu Police Department had to close of H1. According to KGMB TV: The fire’s direction of travel and proximity to the H-2 freeway has caused the HFD to request that the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) close the Northbound H-2 freeway at the H-1 and H-2 merge.

This time we could see the flames from our window.

My mother was oblivious to it all. She didn't want to leave her nishime dish that she was busy nurturing. We told her to make a lot because my brother loves this Japanese stew as well as Art's cousin. She had to use the big pot but then couldn't look into it so she needed the ladder to make sure her epicurean delight was looking just so. Does she have a recipe? I've never seen it. One of these days, I'll just have to watch her and write it all down.

  2. It's scary seeing your mom on a ladder. Hope she is careful...maybe she needs to cook smaller portions. I would definitely get her recipe. We have many fires here, as it been very dry and the air has been smokey but last night we got some needed rain.

  4. I hope your fires are put out by now and are not developing into something California-style, God forbid.
Your mother is such a trooper. Nothing stops her.

  5. Your Mom is marvelous! I just bet her food is fantastic! Stay safe and hope the fires stay away! It's been so dry here this summer that I'm surprised we haven't had more problems with forest fires, but so far, so good!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and give you Mom a hug for me!

  8. Wonderful and love the step stool!

It's funny that on the national news they don't talk about the fires in Hawaii, just California. Hmmm...Stay safe.

  9. I like your mother more every time you post about her--she reminds me of mine today! I hope you get the recipe someday.

Meanwhile those fires are getting scary; I wouldn't like to be able to see the flames so close. Over here we burn our weeds and rushes and even trash all the time; nobody worries about the fires spreading on an island this cold and wet. I'm really beginning to think we're in the *wrong* ocean here...

  13. I was surprised to see/ hear of fires in Hawaii. Forest fires are a very serious problem here in the northwest, but as dry as it has been, we have not yet had the huge fires we often do. Of course there is still time. We are gettin rain now which will lessen the danger.
I do agree with Lin that the photo of your mom on her step stool leaning over the stove is scary too. Hopefully she still has good balance! It's obvious she has determination!

  14. Oh gosh, that is awful about the fires. I feel very badly for those who are displaced by them. As for the photo of your mom, I loved it!! She is amazing! It made me smile. I couldn't help but worry about her slipping and that big pot of hot ingredients spilling....I know, I know Moms are like that, very independent!
