(Apologies to the Mamas and the Papas. I know it's supposed to be Monday, Monday.)
It's been a quiet week but we had a LOT lined up for today!
8:00 - 10:00 AM: We helped our friend, Jeff with his eagle scout project, painting over graffiti and cleaning the skate park and community center.
There were a lot of glass doors, windows, mirrors and ceiling fans to clean.
The skate park really looked new and spiffy after the clean-up and paint job.
It's my brother, Dennis' birthday today and I was proud of him for using his birthday to help out another Boy Scout. He and Art were both Boy Scouts.

10:00: Rushed home, showered and drove out to Waikiki for a 1st birthday party for Art's cousin's grandson.
The birthday party was at the Waikiki Sheraton. We've never been to such an amazing 1st birthday party. The food was out of this world (ate too much) and we had fun seeing all the relatives, many whom we hadn't seen in years. There was even a buffet line just for the keiki's (children) to be able to reach on shortened tables. The bouncy inflated tent had children jumping merrily. A Wii video game was set up to also entertain children.
First Birthday parties in Hawaii are typically a joyous time for extended families to get together to meet the new addition to the family as well as spending time catching up on each other's doings.

The favors were the famous Big Island Candies macadamia nut candies.

Art's cousin's son had hired a balloon sculptor. She said it was a family business. They're called Adventure Balloons. She made the MOST incredible things just by twisting her balloons.

Art decided to get a balloon for Dennis. Won't he be surprised to see this at his party tonight?
As we left the hotel I thought the scene was so "Waikiki." I told Art I felt like we were living next to another world.
When we got home, mom was already preparing her popular Lemon Chicken and kabocha. I prepared a salad and we were ready for Dennis' belated birthday party.

My nephew, Barry and his wife, Miho brought over a scrumptious strawberry cake that we polished off with no hesitation. Here's Cody helping his brother light the candles for his dad.

Poor Barry and Miho! When they were bringing the cake into the house, the box tipped and the cake slipped which smeared the birthday sign. It sure didn't hurt the taste of it at all.

As I said, it's a hectic Sunday, yes! But satisfying?... Absolutely! Wonderful? Definitely!

Wow. What to say. Good for you for that first shift. Probably the most rewarding part of the day.
ReplyDeleteNot so sure about that 1st birthday party. It obviously is not for the child. Hmmmm.
Love the baloon octopus. Hope the birthday boy does too.
Was a busy day for you guys but looked like a lot of fun@
ReplyDeleteArt looks like he has a new green dancing partner. Incredible balloon! Wow
Busy day. I'll bet you will sleep well tonight. Sweet dreams!
ReplyDeleteThanks for inviting us to see your baby luau today.
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed our Waikiki - come down from "upland" more often, neighbor!
Aloha-

What a day Kay, and it looked sounded like a lot of fun. That balloon is a hootand will be well received I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteI can't keep track of you, Kay, and STILL, you have time to blog!
ReplyDeleteI wonder how long the skate park will remain so clean and sparkling; graffiti and skating seem to go hand in hand. First birthday parties do seem strange, but I like the idea of it being a chance to get the whole family together. Love the balloon, I hope it gave everybody a laugh at the party.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you guys had a lot of fun and I have never seen such tall birthday cake candles before. I will have to ask around for them.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your visit to my Pick a Peck of Pixels Blog and for your comment there about the squirrel. Pick a Peck of Pixels
You scored mitsva points (as Edo would say) AND had party time. Yay!
ReplyDeleteWhere do you find the energy for all of this, Kay? You are amazing!
ReplyDeleteHei how are you doing? I've started school already, doing my a-levels right now at a boarding school. Life is so hectic I don't have time to visit blogs that often.
ReplyDeleteTake care Kay! =D Btw, your Sunday looks great!
What a WONDERFUL project that Jeff and Dennis embarked upon! I know that the SkateBoarders really appeciated it! As you know, my son Jeph, was a big time skateboarder and videographer of the sport as well. Jeph and all of his skateboarder friends were super upset whenever graffiti and/or other damage were done to their skateparks. They were so very proud of them and spent most of their leisure time there. What big hearts Jeff & Dennis and all who helped to clean up the skatepark have! Oh behalf of Jeph, thank you.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to DENNIS!! It looks like y'all had a super time! Hawaii looks beautiful!
Dez: My heart always hurts for you when I think about what you and your husband went through when you lost your son and how you get through every day now. I like the idea that somehow cleaning up that skate park could be a little memorial for Jeph.
