Neighborly Bounty

Our neighbor just had a friend come to visit from the outer islands who brought with him lots of veggies and fruits. He shared some of the bounty with us.

We could figure out the limes, lichees and eggplants but the bitter melon is something we don't usually cook. We finally figured out the last veggie (round, brown root) which must be jicamas. (Our neighbor called it Chinese taro.) I remember my Venezuelan friend, Daisy making us a salad with jicama. It had a sort of water chestnut consistency and flavor. I'm going to use it tonight in a salad to serve my brother, nephews and niece-in-law. This will be interesting.

Now... those bitter melons.... hmmmmm.....

  2. Woo! Neighbours with gardens are wonderful--congratulations on the gifts. Good luck with the bitter melons; sounds like a job for cooks.com or the library?

I'm looking forward to having a garden again. It's hard work sometimes but at this time of the year, soooo worth it.

  4. sounds fun. I like jicama just for a snack, cut into pieces-it's so tasty and crunchy-enjoy your friend's harvest and company for dinner. You sure entertain a lot...

  5. Have fun with your fresh vegies. Reminds me the next batch of cucumbers and zucchini probably need to go to the neighbors.

  7. Lovely neighbors like yours are a rare and wonderful blessing. The veggies look so inviting, I know they're going to taste yummy. I look forward to hearing how the salad goes over, if anyone has particular comments about the new addition. There is nothing quite like home-grown vegetables.

You did a nice job on the photo, as usual.

  10. The jicama was very tasty in a salad with noodles, nappa cabbage, chicken chunks, fish cakes, taegu (Korean spicy fish thing). Everybody seemed to enjoy it. We haven't done anything with the bitter melons yet. I'm leaving that to my mother. I have no idea what to do with it.
