Bed Update 4: Prone to Depression

After three nights on the Serta Felicity Latex Mattress from America's Mattress I'm sad to say there IS a depression again. You can't see it as much as on the very soft Tranquility mattress we tried first but.... by golly.... it's there... AGAIN! You can definitely feel it. This is a much firmer, flatter mattress so it's not quite as pronounced (yet) but it's there.

The latex mattress series is touted for having a quicker bounce back than foam. However, because of the fiberfill layer on top, you don't get to that bounce.

There's no other mattress we can exchange it to because I think this is a trait you can't get away from in this line of mattresses. Therefore, unless it caves in further... we'll have to live with this.

The only thing we can say worked for us on this mattress is that it could make it up to the second floor because latex is flexible.

Final impressions:

We wouldn't recommend the Vera Wang latex mattresses because of the depressions.

Make SURE you get the comfort guarantee. I don't even know if all the America's Mattresses have this same guarantee because one of the salespeople at the other store even in Hawaii said they didn't.

Really lie on the bed without the salesperson for 15 minutes in every position you sleep in. This won't tell you if the mattress will have a depression because you're still on it for a short time, but you'll get a better feel for it.

Price doesn't guarantee the best bed for you. Boy! Have we learned that!

  1. It is surprising to me because both of you are not on heavier side as far as weight is concerned...depression appearing so soon is strange.I wish you had shops like us where we custom order cotton-wool mattresses....in winters local merchants expert in making these come home to home to check if their services are required. These mattresses are very comfortable,back-friendly and are easy to transport as one can fold it into a roll whenever desired....we place it in the sun once in a while and in few hours they retain back their fluffiness.

  2. I'm beginning to think the problem is in American style bedding. The market seems to be dictating that we want thicker, more complex mattresses, with fancy pillow tops. You end up with a heavy, bulky bed that you can hardly reach to sit on, and you sink into when you sleep.
I'm thinking the Europeans have it right with their simple, thin mattresses on platforms.

  3. How disappointing for you. But is it comfortable, that's the main point I imagine. I must admit I have been a little mystified by your whole mattress business, as you seem to have completely different mattresses from ours. We've bought several new mattresses recently, since moving house, and have never had to consider bounce back, or been faced with the use of latex or foam.

  4. In Japan they had futon mattresses on the floor and we slept very comfortably when we were visiting there. I agree that we Americans have now made it even more confusing and complex a problem than need be and I don't think we're any more comfortable or that the beds last any longer.

Now we're on to looking for bedroom furniture and if you think finding the mattress was hard, watch us look for furniture.

  5. Oh Kay. I'm torn between sympathy for your disappointment, and envy at such a great title for your post!

I hope that at least the mattress is a good comfortable one in spite of the dents you're making in it, and that somehow furniture shopping goes so well it makes up for the mattress-shopping experience?

    Fingers crossed!

  6. What makes mattresses so comfortable are often what makes them weak as well such as The Pillowtop.

The light synthetic fabric gives you the initial luxurious feel but it's the first part to flatten on you.

I agree with Linda. Europeans have it right with their 8 inch natural latex mattresses.

  7. Solution: put that bed in the guest room and buy what the Europeans use: An 8 inch natural latex mattresses. :)
Sorry you've had so much trouble finding something you like. Good luck with the furniture shopping!

  8. BTW: We have slept on a waveless waterbed for about 20 yrs now. Love it! We have a foam top on it which is great! It bounces back immediately! We had a regular whoo whoo... water bed before that! (You know, one that feels like you are on the ocean?) :)

  9. Ah Kay, so sorry to read of your mattress woes that have continued for so long. Its frustrating to spend so much money, time and effort to end up back where you started. Wouldn't it be nice if stores let one borrow a mattress for a week or so to really try it out! I do hope over time the mattress behaves better! May you have an easier time shopping for the furniture.

  10. Sigh...... I wish we had the European natural latex. I THOUGHT we were buying natural latex but it's got so much other stuff that in the end I discovered this bed listed only 26% latex. It lists something called polyurethane foam too which they said was a kind of latex. It's a lot of "bed language" that is so confusing that it makes you crazy in the end. It's just as Linda says really.

  11. Who knew it could be so hard to find the right mattress! I guess you´ll have to get used to this one and hope you grow to like it.

  12. Susan: I have to admit I was really proud of that post title. :-) Woohoo!

  13. Dez: My guestrooms all have enough mattresses so we're committed to this bed. I think it might be OK if it doesn't form a bigger depression.
