The King is Here!

We had such a difficult time deciding between getting the Eastern vs. the California King. I didn't even know there were two different kinds of Kings, beds that is. The Eastern is 76"x80" and the California King is 72"x84". Art simplified it for me by saying the Eastern is for chubbier, shorter people and the California is for tall, thin people. Riiiighhhht! The Eastern King is actually the original King. The California King is called Cal King. We learned all this when we went bed hunting.

It made sense for us to get the King since Art and I are not all that tall... OK fine, I'm short. I often go to bed later and then have to read to fall asleep whereas Art goes to bed earlier so he can get up before the sun rises to go jogging. It's better for me to be a bit farther away so my reading light doesn't disturb him.

However... and there usually is a however, we figured the King would have a harder time getting up the stairs since it's 4 inches wider. On top of that, we were warned by other mattress stores that in Hawaii everybody gets the Cal King so it would be harder to find King sized bedding.

However... (I told you there would be another however.) the owner of America's Mattress said the latex mattresses bend so much that it shouldn't be a problem getting it past the turn in the stairs. He also said he would give us an even better deal if we bought the King because it's harder to sell in Hawaii and that the movers would take it back and bring a smaller mattress if it couldn't go up. Sounded like a good proposition. Besides we can always order King bedding from Overstock.com and have them mail it to our daughter. Oooooh... she'll love hearing this.

Later:
Whoopie! It's here! It was definitely a struggle to get it up the stairs past the bend. Luckily, it is a latex, bendable, smashable mattress and the delivery guys managed to sqooosh and push it up the stairs with Art and my help.

And guess what? We were able to find sheets at Ross for under $30.00. Perhaps it was because everybody else has the Cal King, we had no trouble finding a selection of (Eastern) Kings to choose from.

Whoopie! Now then... let's see how it'll feel tonight for the test run.

  1. There-here's my "learn something new each day"...I did not know that there were two kinds of "kings". I had heard of the Cal King but not the Eastern...So glad the King made it safely to its final destination! I find the best deals for our king bed (regular king) on Overstock.com. Sweet dreams!

  2. Looks nice. We have the California King as David is 6'1" tall. I am 5'1". Go figure! LOL

Why didn't you buy the bed frame and headboard from the same store? Do you plan to hit Craig's List again? Good luck!

  3. Long live the king! We're a Cal as both tall.

  4. how exciting...we still sleep on a queen sized bed and we are both very tall...I feel lost in a king bed when staying in a motel but it would make it easier to read in bed...what adventures you are continuing to have. hope you are sleeping well now but HOWEVER maybe you have to wait for the sheets to arrive. LOL!

  6. How confusing is it to have two kinds of kings that are so similar? To make it worse (for us anyhow) our European "king" bed is in fact an American "queen" so last year when I bought all this bargain-priced bedding for my king bed, d'oh! ...it was the wrong size.

I hope yours treats you well all night and the bedding you find is gorgeous!

  7. With this one more thing off your mind and list, you should sleep well tonight. Enjoy!

  8. Congrats on the king, Kay. We're queens ourselves but currently sleeping on a king in Greensboro, NC. It IS comfortable and a bit of a treat for us.

  9. I hope you enjoyed the sleep Kay. And it looks huge. Like something a Biblical giant would sleep in. What ever happened to those plain cotton sheets that cost under $5.00? LOL I was just fascinated by your work around the house and the things you guys do together. If you keep it up then you will sooner than later be celebrating your 54th Anniversary. Me and Pat do that tomorrow. The only thing to remember is that she sleeps in a chair and I sleep in our bed all propped up.

  11. I hope you both enjoy the mattress. We have regular (eastern) kings at both locations. The bigger bed does help when you get in and out at different times. The hardest part about the king size is putting on the sheets. They are so close to square, I always seem to try the wrong way first. Maybe you'll be better at it.

  12. We've had a regular king for a long time, so long in fact that we need a new one. I'm watching your process. My big question is are you going to put anything under it - a bed frame, a platform? How does it work? I see there is no box spring.

  13. Cheryl: I did get our bedskirt (for the other bed) on Overstock. I'll be looking there every so often to find a comforter.

Gigi: America's Mattress don't sell bedframes with headboards. We decided to just wait until we found a bedroom set we really liked. We couldn't buy a bedroom set until we KNEW that the king could go up the stairs.

Sarah: I wish I were taller.

Lin: We were feeling pretty good about the mattress last night and we're content this morning. Having that space to move around is quite luxurious.

Christine: Hmmmm... a reading chaise, eh? Hmmm...

Susan: No kidding? That's so interesting about the European Kings. It must make for confusion at the hotels when Americans book them expecting a big king.

I'll betcha it's going to take us another year to buy the bed covers, never mind the bedroom furniture.

    Dina: Yessss.......ahhhhhh....

Jean: We've always had a queen before but since we have the space this time, it seemed like a fun thing to try a king.

Abe: $5.00? I wish! That won't even pay for the pillow case anymore. Sigh... Wasn't gas 25 cents a gallon, too?

Carla: This whole furniture buying is a constant lesson for us.

Jo: Yes, absolutely! I know exactly what you're saying! I don't even know if we've got the sheets on right at this moment. I think we'll get striped sheets next so we can see the direction.

Linda: We're planning to get a platform bed because this mattress is about 15"-16" thick. Instead of doing a box spring, we bought bunkie boards. They're a couple of inches, maybe less and provide a foundation but not more height. The mattress stores all sell them. (It cost $190.00.) That was another thing we learned.

  14. Kay;

The bed looks great...we bought a reg king this time. We had a California king for 20 years, actually we bought it when we lived in California! I always found it harder to find sheets for my Calking. Maybe it just took a little bit of time for it to catch on. But the main reason I bought a regking this time is because it's shorter and my room is small!
