My Computer Got Infected! But We're Not Contagious!

Holey Moley! How many different ways can I get infected or mal-infected or bug infected or whatever.

My poor brother!

First, he had to come over to help us with our termite door and drippy faucet and then last night I got malwared! I've never even heard of malware.

All of a sudden a window on my computer came out and said it was my security system and started to scan my files telling me I was loaded with worms, Trojans and whatnots. It asked if I wanted to remove them. I clicked OK. (Seemed like a good thing to do.) Then it asked what credit card I wanted to use and gave me a Master Card or Visa option to click. Uh oh... my techie son-in-law, Ed had told me before not to open unknown files or click on strange things. I know, I know... OK, I was suspicious then and tried to close it but it wouldn't let me. Eventually all my programs refused to work. I had hot sweats and cold chills go up and down my back.

I called Dennis this morning and he said, "Arrrghhh! No, don't click on stuff like that." He said it was an evil Malware that popped up disguised as a security system and the more I clicked on it, the more it infected my computer. It was a good thing I didn't give my credit card number to remove the problem it had created. That would have potentially caused even more problems.

Dennis managed to somehow isolate whatever it was for now and added another Malware Prevention thing and has admonished me to religiously scan using the Ad-Aware, Malware, Virus check and Updates, etc.

Sheesh!

But.... I'm up and running again... for now.

And to those creepy, nasty, horrible, no good, very bad guys who are making these infections, there is a special hot place just waiting for you...

  1. On seeing your title I rushed over, fearing YOU were infected with something, possible termite-related.
Glad to learn it is not you who was sick.
But the computer stuff is enough to make you sick.
Be well, both you and the machine.

  3. Oh no! Your title made me think something had gone terribly wrong with your foot--very glad to be wrong there. Another big cheer for Dennis!

You've reminded me that I forgot to do my back-up and long scan this week; will get right on it.

  4. OK, I was imagining bone termites or something! Some exotic tropical worm. What next! So I was relieved to see that it was your computer. Now I will use your story as a warning on what not to click. Thank goodness for tech savvy friends and brothers.

  5. Whew... I'm so happy YOU are ok... yes, the title of your blog gave me a bit of a fright as well.

Computers are tricky, aren't they? I try to download as little as possible because of the fears of "bugs" and stuff. I don't click on any pop ups.
I'm glad all is well with your 'puter... lets hope it stays that way and nothing is lurking in the corner!

    Hugs♥

  6. I am lucky to have my son keep track of my computer and it sounds like you do to, hopefully you don't have that problem again. It is so frustrating to have computer problems. Hope you have a nice weekend.

  7. I think you scared all of us loyal readers who thought your broken leg was infected. It's bad enough it's your computer-glad you got it figured out. I had a mac computer and they are rarely bothered by such things but need to update virus programs etc and keep your guard up. happy surfing.

  8. Oh my goodness...I saw the title and zipped right over here fearing the worst! Glad its not you that's infected. Send all those worms to the termite company-that will teach 'em! I use Symantec, has a program to do all the scans, maintenance, updates etc. and I set the time myself for it to do its job. Well worth the $$

  9. I thought you were going to say your foot had somehow become infected, Kay. Phew! But a computer virus has to be just about as bad. I can't imagine what kind of people get a kick out of screwing up others' computers, honestly. I'm glad you didn't share your credit card number. It would be easy to do in the heat of the moment. Glad your brother was able to come to your rescue.

  11. Well, I was scared, too, and have to agree with Dina that when your computer gets sick it's definitely enough to make you sick as well. Glad you're both doing better -- hope it stays that way!

    Enjoy your weekend!

  13. Whew;

I thought you had some kind of infection , and yes I thought that the termites had done you in!!!!
I had a problem with malwere too..even downloaded a program to fight it and that was bogus and caused me more problems. Got back up and running and now I am very careful when I see something even a tiny bit suspicious!
    So glad you're OK...!!!!!!!

  15. That is so weird, cause when I was reading your blog yesterday, I had to call Dennis over to look. For some reason, I could NOT get out of your blog site. No matter what I tried it wouldn't go anywhere so I eventually just shut it down and rebooted it. Dennis couldn't figure it out either. Wonder if it had anything to do with your problem. Guess he's going to have to run the old scan on this computer when he gets home from your house. hehehe Aren'tcha glad you have your very own personal techie not only back in Chicago but here too??? Those guys usually would cost ya a small fortune if you had call them....and even more for house calls.

  16. I will personally volunteer to put the creepy, nasty, horrible, no good, very bad guys on the bus to (bleep, bleep) for you.

SO glad we didn't find ourselves needing to wait for computer viruses to be booted out the door one by one and cleaning crews to come in. It took my sister days to get up and running again when an evel Malware wriggled into the inner workings of her computer.

  17. That's awful Kay. I had something similar last year, a pop up box appeared and it read everyone in my address book and sent letters to them all saying I - mentioning me by name - had recommended this link. Of course I hadn't so I had to send an explanation out warn them all not to open it. The only reason I knew about it was that I had my other e-mail address in there so I got the same letter.

  18. EWW! I got a Trojan once and as bad as it was I kept it from destroying everything by not clicking on anything. Mine said my computer was infected with porn and there was this lady in a black bikini dancing around the screen. Pardon my language but WTF? Please click here to remove it, I shut down my computer called my dad and said DAAAAD! What do I do? 2 months later he sent me the disc to fix it. Gotta love Dad. SIGH

  19. That is scary - its fraught I think. I dont really understand my computer well enough. Glad you got it fixed though.

  20. I have pretty well convinced my family not to click anything unless they know who the person is and so far it works.

I am glad you got our of trouble.

  21. Oh dear..I am glad that the computer problems got addressed and I am sorry to read the other issues going on...But I do thank you so much for your support during my ongoing family issues....

  22. You have a great sense of humor, Kay. No matter what you're writing about, I usually begin smiling or laughing. Have you ever thought of getting a Mac computer???

By the way, I keep meaning to say, I hope you keep the blog header for a long time. I love seeing that dear little girl when I come and visit.
