Going with a "Green" Car

We've known for a year that we needed a smaller car because we always feel like we're guzzling gas with our van when it's just the two of us going places. We do need to still keep our van for our house construction but for everyday... what to buy? We tossed it back and forth like we usually do and decided to go with a Honda Fit. It's such a cute little car. I thought it was great!

Then our son reminded us that we needed to be conscious of our environment and think about getting a hybrid. We test drove a 2010 Toyota Prius today.

Our salesperson, Rocky who coincidentally lives rather close to us took us to a hill to see how the engine would charge the batteries when we were going down and in effect be getting a 100 miles a gallon... or was it a thousand? I don't remember.

There was a white Prius in the showroom which for some reason costs more than the silver. We decided against getting white because everybody in Hawaii seems to get white to reflect the strong sunlight. However, I'd never be able to find it in a parking lot with all the small white cars around. That's why I loved my lavender Camry. I could always spot it and nobody...NOBODY wanted to steal it. :-) We gave that car to our macho firefighter son who is NOT enamored of the color.

So there you have it! We've done our part for the environment and the economy although it's cost us a lot of green by going green.

  1. Congratulations, Kay! Beautiful car. I prefer silver, too.

LizKauai has 2 Priuses -- 1 for her son and 1 for herself. She swears by it.

What can I say? Some people have lots of money. haha. Not me, I am struggling!

  2. There's been a lot in the news about these hybrid cars, so I'll be interested to hear how it goes. When we change our car we'll be thinking hard about getting a hybrid too. Interestingly, here in the UK we seem to have more silver cars (like ours) than white.

  11. The green cars are more expensive to buy but do end up saving you so much money.
I wanted to get one this year but I had to have a bigger car for my scooter! Tisk!
We kept our Honda for a few more years!
I'm jealous but so happy for you!

  12. How great is this? I love anything made by Toyota. Our Camry was our best car...EVER. My hubby has loved his Tundre. Now THERE'S a gas guzzler. Of course it's a 2001 and has 16,000 miles on it, so it hasn't guzzled huge amounts of gas over the years.

Congrats! I think silver cars are my absolute favortie. Class Act!!!

  14. I LOVE the Prius. I really liked the small size of it. I wanted to get that one too, but it IS rather pricey, so we ended up with the Corolla. You'll never have a problem parallel parking though, that's for sure!
    Congrats! Enjoy your new car!

  15. I was hoping we'd buy a Prius the last time we traded, but we didn't. Maybe next time. I'll be eager to hear how you like it.

  18. Such a great idea. I can't wait until I can get a car that gets 100 miles to the gallon. Congratulations Kay. You've moved on to the next step in our century.

  19. I fear that is rather the problem with a lot of 'green' ideas - they cost so much that many people can't afford to incorporate them into their lives. Sorry I haven't been by much - it has been a busy spring, and some days I barely get on the computer at all. I'm going to go back and read (and comment) on some older posts now, Kay.

  22. Congrats on the new car! I think you made a good decision. I would love to have a Prius...or even a newer Corolla. But can't afford it. Thank goodness Toyotas are so good. My 1999 Corolla is going to have to last a while.

  24. Congrats on your new car, and going green.
I'm hanging on to my ol' Sally the Ford Explorer, because she came slightly used 10 years ago, was paid cash for, hauls hay & feed, furniture finds & grand kids. The way the economics are here I will be living with her for another 250,000 miles.
