My daughter, Tiffany called me on the cellphone while we were standing at the television section of the Best Buy store. Art and I have been seesawing back and forth trying to decide which TV to buy. Art is reluctant to get cable so it was important that we get a TV with a good tuner to catch those elusive television signals from somewhere up in the air. "Hi, Tif, we're at the Best Buy looking at the Sonys. Don Quixote's has a sale on the 32" and Best Buy will match the price. We decided not to get it at Don Quixote because they have no return policy if the tuner is not good. Best Buy has a 30 day return policy."
"Mom," my daughter says with a sigh, "I know you're not going to buy a TV. You and Dad won't buy anything until you've researched it to death and looked at every single set on the island. Then you'll wait for a sale..."
I suppose our daughter knows us very well but we talked to a very knowledgeable Best Buy associate who told us all about picture brightness, tuner, etc. and we decided to take the plunge.
We haven't set it up yet. I'll let you know if we're able to get more than 3 stations. At the very worst, I may end up doing more reading instead.
When I called Tif a few minutes later to tell her we'd bought the TV, she laughingly said, "Mom, you didn't buy the TV just to prove me wrong did you?"
Now then....if it does work OK... do we buy a blue ray or a DVD player? One had a wireless capability. One had Netflix connectivity. Arrrrghhhhh!
Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteWe've done without TV for years, and have been wondering if we should get a new one. Yes no yes no yes no, forever. Part of the problem is there are too many choices: widescreen, flatscreen, this size, that size, HD, etc... I get tired just thinking about it!
Good luck picking up good stations!
Get cable! I find it to be well worth the money in this wild and crazy world. Who knows what is going to happen tomorrow? Happy for you that you bought the TV,Kay.
ReplyDeleteKay, enjoy your new TV!!
ReplyDeleteI did research so much research before we bought our 37 inch TV. So many different variables...Kevin bought us a 52 inch TV(sweet boy) and it broke in 11 months. Thank goodness it was 11 months and not 13 months.. anyway we got to pick out another one and this time I got a contract, which I don't ever buy!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your new purchase!
funny how one decision leads to another...your cable must be expensive...we have it and even with 100+ stations some nights there is nothing worth watching. Although my hubby will always watch any sports program so I go to the computer room, close the door, put on the music and enjoy computering...
ReplyDeleteI just leave that stuff to The Hubby. The only one that matters is the one in the bedroom. It HAS to have an alarm to wake us up in the morning and go off at night. Hard to find.
ReplyDeleteWe got rid of TV altogether nearly a year ago and I'm been amazed to find that I don't really miss it at all. Never thought I'd be saying that, but wonders never cease!
ReplyDeleteI confess I like to watch TV, I want a good picture, and I like choices. We have HD cable, and there are many chioces. But as Lin indicated, sometimes the best choice is to turn it off.
ReplyDeleteI certainly can relate to the dilemna of making a large purchase. I debate so long that it makes me tired and then I always wonder if I did, indeed, make the right decision! Enjoy the new tv!
ReplyDeleteNo cable or dish?
ReplyDeleteI'm flabbergasted. IS there any broadcast TV here on Oahu?
Treat yourself, there's good stuff to watch, Kay.
Aloha
Now my son has blue ray and he says it's the best. He also gets Netflix and says they're the best. We have neither, our television is as old as the hills and I'm wondering when it's going to break down so that we can buy a new one :) Congratulations on your new TV.
ReplyDeleteOh how funny. This sounds like me and Jordyn. Also sounds like Tif has your number. Ummm...blue ray or DVD...how do you decide that? More research? Hahaaaa
ReplyDeleteDid I tell you, I'm crazy about your new header. Baby girl is so adorable and, that outfit is picture perfect.
We have a 52 inch Sony HDTV and love it. Bought a Wii, Playstation 3 (Bluray), and record on DVR. We also have Oceanic Cable. What is the point of having a TV if you cannot watch all the shows and games you want to watch?
ReplyDeleteSorry, Kay, I didn't mean to sound so sassy. I guess it's just a matter of different strokes for different folks!
ReplyDeleteSusan: I hate making decisions! With technology, there's so much to consider and so much I don't understand. Yuuuuck!
ReplyDeleteMare: We've picked up 15 stations with just the antennae. They're not all perfect but we have all the major stations except for Fox. I won't be able to see House and American Idol. Then again, Art says he'll try moving the antennae and seeing if that works. Cable is so expensive here in Hawaii.
Sherri: Thanks! We will once we take it back to Best Buy because (quality control?) there's some sticky double sided tape that's stuck between the glass screen and the border. We didn't want to pull it ourselves.
Peggy: Good ol' Kevin! What a wonderful son! We didn't buy the warranty. I hope we don't regret it.
Lin: I don't mind not having all the cable stations actually. We have enough to watch with just the major networks.
Jill: I didn't know TVs came with alarms. Wow!
Sylvia: I think that's why Art doesn't want to get cable. We don't have enough time to read as it is.
Linda: We do get excellent picture quality. I love the clarity compared to the analog we used to get.
Cheryl: I think we'll have the TV set up by tomorrow. This will be fun.
Cloudia: Oh yes! We can get very good reception if everything works like it should.
Denise: Blue Ray, hunh? Sigh... I was just figuring on settling with the DVD. I shall rethink this. I like the Netflix idea.
Dellgirl: Thanks a bunch! I do love that photo of KC. She's lost a bit of that babyfat but her hair hasn't grown much. I guess that's why Tif put hats on her.
Gigi: No problem. I understand what you're saying. The only channel we're not getting is channel 2. We're going to try adjusting the antennae. Cable is so expensive here, don't you think? We really have enough to watch with all the major channels. I'm pleased that the Sony came with a good tuner.
Oh my. I read the story you wrote and thought about dial up and the Internet. Around here, the roofs sprouted lazy-x television antennas by the thousands. Forests of aluminum and steel pipes all working on gathering any signals available and then there came a time when those all changed to newer models that were no longer lazy-x styles and then those all came down and people, for the most part, got hooked up to Dish, or to Time Warner.
ReplyDeleteAny now instead of one to three "good" stations, everyone has over a hundred but still only watch one at a time. And those are almost always a favorite program.
My daughter, living with us now, got used to a television set tuner style and only got one or two stations. She began watching movies on it and still does. Not much regular television watching.
I hope the new set exceeds your expectations.
Abe: Thanks, Abe. We're going to take the set back to see if they can get that piece of double stick tape that's lodged between the screen and border. That's rather shoddy workmanship which is a worry. I'm surprised that Sony let something like that get by them. I may regret not getting that extended warranty.
ReplyDeleteAloha!
ReplyDeleteI'll follow in your footsteps soon. Our TV is so small that my daughter jokes that she needs binoculars to watch it! Maybe we'll surprise her before her next visit...
Your granddaughter is precious! I hope to be blessed with one some day!
Great blog!

Good on you. I loved Tif's reaction too. That is the problem everything changes so quickly its too hard to keep up with it all! Good luck and hope everything works brilliantly.
ReplyDeleteI have had a Sony Brava for 18 months and have loved it. I also have cable because that is the only way to get good programs. You can't find them on network tv.
ReplyDeletefrenchie4moi: So far we've been happy with the Sony. It's caught almost all the major stations and then some... about 16 digital station which is great. The only major station we don't get is Fox. Ah well, I can get House on Hulu.com.
ReplyDeleteLilly: So far so good. I'm just glad that decision is over with. Phew! Aren't daughters a lot of fun?
Tulsamom: I wonder if it's because we live on a small island without mountains to block our reception. We're doing OK in the reception department.
We get good reception, it is just that the cable programs like National Geographic, Discovery,SciChannel,TNT,USA are so much better then the network programs that you can get without cable. Plus I get the HD and I don't know if that works as well without cable.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your blog about your travels and Hawaii. I have been to China, Hong Kong, Macau and Thailand but not Hawaii.
Thanks for the visit to my blog.
