Class of 97-98

An invitation to a reception for students at the school where I taught 1st grade in Illinois was forwarded to me here in Hawaii. I'm looking at this old class photo and it brings back such memories. There's that bright child who will be the next President Obama, another who will be a corporate CEO, yet another who will be a nurse, a teacher, a comedian, an actor...

I have sent in my regrets with a letter to the students telling them that contrary to what they may have heard, the world is a beautiful place full of new friends to be made and opportunities waiting. It's also a world of responsibilities and I did tell them that I've broken my foot so they should watch where they step.

  1. Kay, that was so nice of your former students to invite you!! You look the same now as you did then! Hope the foot is healing nicely!

  3. I am glad you had such a great career! Not everyone has the patience and talent to teach -- 1st grade, no less.

My older daughter is a high school math teacher. She told me she tends to bite her nails whenever she is stressed out. Not everybody understands algebra and there is always one who is rebellious. She looks forward to summer vacation to recharge her batteries.

Hope your foot and you are feeling better! Have a great weekend!

  5. what a fun photo of your teaching days-would be nice to keep track of all your older now students and see what happened to them. I wonder if classmates.com does that? well, well, well...take care and heal quickly. stay cool and enjoy your change of pace...you could write up some of your many adventures into a book see blurb.com-there is supposedly a way to make your blog into a book. I'd like to try it someday. take care.

  6. So many kids over so many years. And yet, while the classes blur together, we certainly remember individuals.
I like your message about the world being a beautiful place. It is. Too often we just talk about the ugly parts.

  7. Doesn't it warm your heart when former students remember you, lovingly? This is so nice, Kay.

It brings back some fond memories of classroom days, class pictures, and amazing students. I still have all of my pictures too.

How is your foot today? I hope it's better, and no more pain.

  8. Everybody: I agree. It's wonderful to be remembered. I wish I were in Illinois so I could attend. The person organizing this get together used to be my room mother and PTA president. She said she would take photos of my old students and e-mail them to me. That is so nice of her.

Foot Update (Thanks for asking, Leona): It's feeling better. I can actually put some weight on it but have to be careful because one wrong move causes rather a huge painful jolt. It also makes Art crazy when I gasp. I know it's not good for his blood pressure.

  9. Good morning Kay, lovely post about your former students. Glad to hear your foot is feeling better. Hard not to move it in a natural way, that's when the jolts come right? Sending lots of healing thoughts over your way :)

  10. I always am amazed to hear about the futures of kids that I knew[taught], and I love running into them. I think it's one of teaching's bonuses...future smiles!

  12. Oh what a cute photo! It's so sweet that you'll be getting photos of them nearly grown up. I remember all my teachers, often, and wonder how they're doing.

I'm glad to hear your foot's mending, and Art just sounds like such a darling, taking such good care of you.
