Which Microwave Oven to Buy???

Sarah of Brit Gal in the USA had a lot of trouble with her microwave ovens breaking and got lots of good advice from fellow bloggers on which microwave to buy next.

We have a Sharp microwave oven that's too small for our needs. Larger casserole dishes can't turn on the carousel. However, the Sharp oven seems to be going strong after about a year and a half. The older microwave died with the sudden surge after a power outage.

We went to the library and checked out the Consumer Reports ratings, looked on the web at other reviews and asked my daughter how she liked her GE Profile. She said her first Profile was defective and was recalled but the second one was OK. We then visited several appliance stores to see what's available and I think we've finally made our choice unless somebody tells me I shouldn't get it. We're going to go with the GE Profile counter top, 2.1 cubic feet. I sure hope it's a good decision. Consumer Reports recommends it. Somebody on the web said you can bake cookies in it. Hmmm? I wonder. I'll believe it when I see it.

  1. I have always been a huge fan of GE products as a consumer as well as in sales so I would say, in my opinion, this is a good buy! I've always enjoyed the Profile series not only for its performance but for its elegant look as well.
    Enjoy!

  2. Kay, now this is funny and going to be interesting. The two we have had that have lasted no more than 6 & 3 months respectively were GE!! So I hope you have better luck, c'os I will never buy another GE product!

However we did end up buying a SHARP LOL!

  4. These days it seems no matter what brand you buy, some are good and some bad. It's like buying a camera. Unless you spend hundreds, you simply take your chances on a good or bad lens.
I have a little old (and I do mean OLD) Samsung microwave. No buttons to push. No choices to make. But it still works fine.

  5. Good luck with your new microwave! I like researching big purchases too... then I don't like having to learn an appliance all over again. Oh well! The one you've picked looks like a pretty one: I hope it serves you well for many years.

  6. Kay;

We have had a lot of Sharp's in the past. The one that came with the house is a maytag. We have lived here five years and it's still going strong. It's not as big as the one you want but it's been good so far.
PS Hey Kay, how do you get your header picture so big...I have tried on various templates to do the same...I'm at a duh point?
I love that you change the picture often...I think almost everyday. wow!

  8. I guess I've been lucky. I've never had a microwave oven die. Our house has a GE, I had a small Sharp that I gave to my nieces when hubby moved to his apartment, my mother is using my old Panasonic. I think you can get a good one or a bad one whichever brand you buy.

  9. It's all luck, I think. We bought the "King od the Hill" Litton when they were THE brand name to buy. It cost us a fortune... okay, it cost my mother a fortune. It was a gift from her. At any rate the sucker was HUGE. For whatever reason, one of my son's lent it to the mother of one his best friends for a big party she was having and brought their little Sharp over for us to use in the interim. I can't tell you how sad I was to give that Walmart appliance back to her and have to take my top of the line micro back. I loved that little Sharp.

I'm just impressed that you did so much homework. Since our Litton experience, we've just closed our eyes and thrown a dart at some magazine articles to decide what to buy. Well... pretty close.

  10. We don't even have a microwave and I haven't used one years. Was amazed at how well I did without one. Just got tired of replacing them and didn't use them that much anyway. Good luck finding one that works for you!

  12. We have a GE brand. It is not new and was cheap when we bought it at Walmart. It has a turntable. It must be three or four years old or more by now. Use it every day.

I will be publishing a story about a bento box I think tomorrow.

  13. Wow-I am so amazed by all the research you put into your newest purchase! I love the microwave, I have had mine for 6 years and so far so good, would miss it terribly if it "died". The header as always is absolutely gorgeous. So cheerful.

  14. My comment didn't post..I always use CR as a reference, but sometimes you just get a lemon no matter how good the research..Nothing is made as it used to be...

  15. My parents bought us a GE microwave for our first Christmas back in 1983. I just threw it away because my son felt it had radio-active waves or something like that, but it still worked. I just bought the cheapest one at Target - don't even know the brand. I'm not a big microwave person, but that GE Profile sounds very nice. Good luck!!
