Moanalua Garden Feathered Friends

Art and I had a day of errands today driving into Waikiki to bring some things for my son-in-law who is here on business and then a bunch of this and thats. In between the morning this and the afternoon thats we decided to have a little picnic lunch at the Moanalua Gardens.

The monkeypod trees there are absolutely beautiful and we were glad we took the time to stroll about the park and just enjoy the respite.

That's when we noticed the beautiful koi pond with a flock of ducks swimming and meandering about. I hadn't seen ducks in Hawaii much so I couldn't help but take a bunch of pictures.

I was crouched down taking a photo when suddenly this little cherub came up behind me and actually stood on my feet and pressed her cheek almost against mine to see what I was taking a photo of. She chattered away asking and telling me what was on her mind. It reminded me so much of KC that I wanted to give her a hug but instead I just spoke to her as a teacher and made sure her parents knew where she was.

I loved watching the ducks swimming lazily over the gigantic, colorful koi right beneath them. They seemed completely oblivious to the huge fish directly below them.

After a while the ducks got into a row and marched about before climbing right back into the pond again at which time we had to continue on our way...

  2. Symbiotic relationships here--the ducks and the fish, you and the grandkid-like girl.

  4. What beautiful photos to go with the story of your day, I loved this!

We have a lot of ducks here, but no koi, and I've never seen such big fish so close to ducks on the surface. I'd love to visit there one day.

  5. What a wonderful time. The first pic of the ducks and Koi could be a jigsaw puzzle. Very cool.

  8. That sounds like a lovely way to spend some time, and the little one obviously knew you were a safe and gentle person to talk to. You must give off that "teacher of young ones" vibe. Kids are very perceptive.

  9. That's what I call a Tasha Tudor day. I have no idea why I refer to them that way. She just seems to live a peaceful existance.

I am in awe of the way you so often associate yourself with the softer side of nature. You and Sandy and Michelle and Linda... so many of you are so in tune with the gentility of life. I love it!!!

And... of course, I love your island home. I honestly think I must have been a Pacific Islander in a previous life. My soul seems to be so drawn to your land.

  11. Sylvia, Jean, Bobbie: Thanks, everyone. I wish I had my own camera though. I couldn't get the hang of using Art's tiny one which was frustrating. I only had the tiny one because that's what I carry in my backpack.

Dina: Hmmm....I didn't think of that... Hmmm... I'm still thinking...

Susan: I swear some of those fish looked as big as the ducks.

Jill: So true. A jigsaw picture of this would drive everybody crazy.

Lin: You're right. The weather was near perfect. Cool and wonderful.

Jo: I like to think I look non threatening. Kids usually do talk to me as do dogs, cats, etc.

Caryn: I have to agree that this is a rather peaceful place until you talk to my friends here who tell me about the crime rate.

Still, we have a lot of beautiful places in the islands. You need to "hele" on over here.

  12. Kay, thanks so much for sharing the Koi Pond pictures! I love Koi ponds!! The ducks and the koi looked like traffic on the freeway. What a cute little girl, that was funny that she wanted to get that close to see what you were taking a pic of! Children are so trusting of people aren't they. She is lucky you are such a nice person!

  15. Sherri: Koi pond traffic! So true! I should have posted the other photos where you can't tell where the ducks start and fish tail ends.

Peggy: Lunch was indeed pleasant almost as good as the one at Biaggio's.

Cheryl: It was definitely relaxing...for me anyway. Nothing like concentrating on a million koi trying to avoid the duck's feet.

  17. Cloudia: You can see the Hitachi tree there. The gardens are always full of Japanese tourists who go there for the TREE.

  18. Lovely series of photos Kay, I am going to have to put that on the list for the next time we visit Hawaii. The one of the little girl was precious and the ducks above the koi was a great shot, as they all were.
