Is Macy's Going Under?

Yesterday was quite a busy day! We're trying to tie up some loose ends and get the house ready for us to leave on Sunday. We spent part of the day at Macy's because Tif had a gift card she wanted us all to spend. The store is having some deep discounts and on top of that, if you were wearing red, they give you another 20% off! How can they do that? Tif bought a beautiful $60.00 sweater that was 75% off and then they took off another 20% because I was wearing my red sweatshirt. I don't know how they can keep doing these kinds of sales and still stay afloat. Wow!

Last night we were invited to a friend's home for dinner. Jiro is a (Canadian) prof at Northwestern and his wife, Ida (from Albania). I love having friends from different countries. It's always very interesting to get a different perspective on everything. Their adorable daughter Izzie, is a buddy of KC. It was great to see them enjoying Elmo together. I'm still trying to figure out this incredible Elmo fascination.

Today, we had lunch with our favorite Friday Lunch companions. We used to always have Friday lunches with Daisy (from Venezuela) and Alan at the cheapest restaurant we could find. That was our goal. Cheapest and Tastiest! It was our turn to pick this week. We decided on Joy Yee's. Not the cheapest... but a popular place near the Northwestern campus. Pad Thai was so so. My Vietnamese vermicelli egg roll salad dish was better.

  1. Kay, I think Macy's is having trouble. They layed alot of people off, thousands actually. A few years back they were in trouble too, but then they rallied back again. Hopefully they will be able to stick it out through this economic slump! I love that store! Good for Tif on the great sweater sale!! Your lunch looked fun! I love Pad Thai, sorry it wasn't so great :(. Have a great weekend!

  3. The department stores are the same here too. Its kind of sad. Good for everyone who has jobs I guess though. Once they used to have sales twice a yesr now they are ongoing. Pad Thai - I learnt how to make it when in Thailand and havent stopped eating it.

  4. I love Macy's too, ever since I moved to America and it was a relatively short walk from our apartment. I hope they can bounce back okay. Your get-togethers sounded so much fun. I love having friends from different countries, makes me think outside the box.

  5. Another fun day you've had. How wonderful to have so many friends and to be able to see and visit with them. I imagine the time here has flown right by. My children all loved Elmo, I think he is just plain fun and cuddly myself!

  8. As far as Macy's goes, I guess moving inventory even at a loss, or almost a loss, is better than nothing. It's so hard to know what to think and do. Because people aren't spening like they used to, businesses are going broke and people are losing jobs. And yet, before, people were spening beyond their means and charging, running up large debt. Saving is good, ...but bad.

  9. You guys have more fun friends than any couple I've ever heard of. I think it's great! It speaks well for the type of people you are.

It'll almost be sad to see this trip end. It's been a good time for all of us.

  11. Yes, Kay. It seems like months ago that I heard from my sister-in-law that they were going out of business, it's one of her favorite stores. You and Tiff really had a grand time, caught some deals that can't be beat. I'll bet that made for a happy outing.
