Heating System Blues!

Yesterday morning, we were startled awake to KC's crying. When I got up to get her I found the temperature in house had dipped. The outside temperatures were in the single digits and KC was freezing in the cold house. We brought her to our bed and she quickly warmed up and went back to sleep.

We bought this new American Weathermakers system about 4 years ago and it is still not glitch free. At least once a month during the frigid months, the system somehow turns itself off. It's always in the dead of night. They've tried several things and told us to get a dedicated electrical line which we did but it still does this. It's aggravating!

He's coming back today to replace the circuit board. The technician doesn't know if that's the problem but he doesn't know what else it could be. He says these new systems are so sensitive that it could be an uneven power source leading to the house.

Excuse me? We've never had a problem before with the power source before we replaced our old system.

Arrrrghhhh! I feel guilty leaving for Hawaii without this problem fixed completely. Art says we'll just hope that the circuit board will cure the problem.

I'm going to bundle up KC now before the technician comes this morning to work on the heating system. Wish us luck!

  2. Oh no, how awful! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the new circuit board will be the cure. An uneven power source leading to the house? Pardon me while I snort! Sounds like he's covering his and everyone else at that company's tushies.

  3. Kay;

I just hate being cold, poor little KC. Doesn't it just irk you when you think that you are buying the best most up to date home appliances and then somthing goes wrong the fist year or just past your warrantee date...grrrrrr
Has happened to me with this new house. Our furnace has a part that has to be replaced every year...so we have to have a repairman out every year just to fix that...$100...then we have it cleaned at the same time so add another $60....did I say grrrrrr
Have a great rest of your visit!

  4. Oh, that's awful! We had a problem last year with our furnace that the man they sent out simply couldn't find. Then this year, a new worker, discovered that blower had died! The furnace would come on and burn oil, but with no blower we hadn't really had any heat in the house. So, new blower and what a difference! So I hope this fix will take care of things.

  6. Brrrrr!!

When we first moved to our farmhouse, we only had a 250 gal propane tank and the gas co would take too long to come fill us up... many, many cold nights that first year. Fortunately, that was my husband's business (hvac) and he installed a 1000 gal tank before the next winter, and we got out of our contract and went somewhere else. We haven't run out since.

That reminds me... I need to go check the tank to see how much we used this year! Sad, but I don't even know how often the tank needs refilled.

Good thing you told us about this!

  7. That is frightening because if is house has no heat, and no one is there to know, pipes freeze and then there is a real mess. I hope it is fixed for you soon.

I thought of you when I watched the national weather last night.

    Bundle up.

  8. Hope you get it fixed Kay, how frustrating and not knowing when it might just happen!

  9. I do wish you luck! It's a terrible thing to be cold inside the house, and when there's a baby involved, it's twenty times worse.

  10. How aggravating! And living in Maine, I'd be less than honest if I said this has never happened to us!

  11. A broken furnace is always a difficult thing to deal with... but with a baby in the house, it becomes so much harder.

I can't stand the thought of that sweet little girl crying because she was cold.

Glad she had some grandparents to sandwich her between them and make her toasty, secure and able to sleep again.

    I wish you the best.

  13. I think maybe you will be ready to return home to warm Hawaii when the time comes. You've had very extreme weather in Chicago.
    Good luck with the furnace.

  15. I heat with kerosene, and I maintain a contract with the people who deliver it because every year I have at least one problem with the furnace not kicking on. I call them and even if it's the middle of the night, someone is always on call. My furnace was replaced 5 years ago, so it's not old!!
I'll bet Hawaiian weather is looking good right about now!

  18. Poor KC! But I bet snuggling with her grandparents helped soothe her and warm her up. What an irritating problem to have to deal with, especially when its so darn cold. I bet Hawaii is looking very inviting about now...

  19. Good luck Kay. I hope it gets fixed. It looks so cold there too!

  20. All the best in fixing the problem! Btw, how are you doing? Hope you're doing great. Just dropping by to see what you've been up to lately. Cheers!

  21. Hello, Stanley! Nice to see you again! We're doing fine here in the frozen north. We'll be returning to Hawaii on Sunday. I hope your exams turned out well and all is going terrific on your part of the world.

  22. That sounds serious. Good luck.

This is my last comment for two days. Packing up the laptop to fly home. TTYL from the Holy Land.
    Love to all.

  23. Oh this is awful. These things seem to be designed for failure which is even worse. You should be able to get at least 10 good years out of a major appliance.

  24. "We bought this new American Weathermakers system about 4 years ago and it is still not glitch free."

The problem is the adjective :-(

    "The technician doesn't know..."

    Same adjective :-(
