Well, we did it! We made the commitment and bought the sewing machine. Thanks for the gentle prodding, Amanda. I needed that.
We've dithered about for several months knowing I needed to buy a sewing machine but not being able to make up my mind on which one. Amanda asked me a couple of days ago if I'd decided on a machine, which got me determined to just bite the bullet and buy one.
The Bernina 1008 (mechanical) was expensive enough but... Good grief! Extended warranty coverage for 4 years was another $200.00. Argghhh! I know it's often unnecessary and we usually don't buy the extended coverage but in this case, Art said I should just do it so I don't have to worry about it. I'll have to try to use it a lot so that if I'm going to break it, I do it in the next 4 years. The salesperson says I have unlimited lessons forever. There was a nice sound to that.... (She gave me a free packet of jeans needles so that brings the cost of the warranty to $194.00!) $6.00 for a packet of 5 needles???? Can you believe it? Since when are needles so expensive?
We had three bigger cost items we needed to get. Now that this is finally over, we'll be looking for that teeny tinier car and a TV for upstairs. I wonder how long it'll take before we make up our minds on those things. I'm sure our kids would tell you that we're Master Ditherers so who knows when it'll all be over? Be ready for more dithering posts.
An extra THANK YOU to all you crafty seamstresses who gave me such great advice several months ago when the sewing machine dithering began.
Yeah!!!! Now you need to make a little quilt top!
ReplyDeletehow fun free lessons-now you can make cute little dresses and outfits for the grand daughter. you're going to be so busy...
ReplyDeleteI know you'll enjoy your new machine! I made all my kids clothes, plus mine when they were little. But I finally ended up giving it to one of my daughters and never replaced it. Still miss sewing now and then, but not enough to spend the money right now. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteMy Bernina and my Riccar serger are stored at my daughter's home.
ReplyDeleteThere have been times I've wanted them here... but, our house is so teeny, and the storage space is limited... so things that aren't used often are no longer here.
Your post made me long to bring them back... oh well. If I had an adorable baby granddaughter like yours, I might do it. It would be fun to sew for a little girl again.
I looked to buy a pattern a few weeks ago. Yikes!! They've certainly climbed in price!
Unlimited lessons?! It would take me the rest of my life to learn how to sew.
ReplyDeleteTitchadshi (=may you be renewed), the Hebrew blessing you say to someone who gets something new.
Julie: I have no idea how, I'm afraid. I have a lot to learn.
ReplyDeleteLin: This will be a challenge. I used to sew a few of Tif's clothes when she was very little and I sewed her middle school graduation dress. That was a long time ago. I hope it's like getting on a bike again.
Sylvia: I left my older Bernina with my daughter in Illinois. I've essentially bought the same machine again for Hawaii.
Caryn: These days, I'm suspecting it's cheaper to buy clothes off the rack rather than to make it yourself.
Dina: Thank you for the blessing, my dear friend. I could use every blessing in the book to help me figure out how to sew again.
How exciting! I don't know what I'd do without my machine - I used my mother's and grandmother's machines when I was a child, and had my own first machine as a 21st birthday present, and have never been without one since. I've made my clothes, clothes for Christopher and the boys, soft furnishings, and lately loads and loads of quilts. What will your first project be?
ReplyDeleteI think I'm going to make a cover for our washing machine since it's outside of the house in the patio. I know it sounds strange but it's quite common in Hawaii. Wish me luck because I'm going to need it and Dina's blessing.
ReplyDeleteEverything about sewing is expensive these days, but it sounds like you have selected a machine that can handle heavy jobs and repairs, besides creative projects. I have no doubt you'll pick up your skills quickly. Every time I start on a project I get nervous, but I also like the challenge.
ReplyDeleteWell that is one jet engine of sewing machines Kay. It looks beautiful. Congratulations on your new purchase. Also, thank you very much for stopping by my SWF post and leaving such nice comments. Always great to see you there.
ReplyDeleteKay, congratulations on the Bernina! What a marvelous machine! I don't have one but my friend in NJ did and she could sew anything. I used to sew all my kids clothes until they were about 12 yrs. old. Sewing machines are wonderful for all sorts of things! Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteYou'll be able to make some nice crafty things with this!! It's beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteKay;
ReplyDeleteI have heard from many sewers that the Bernina is the best...the cadilac of machines...this machine is serious. What will you make first!
Between you and me, we will keep this economy moving.
Very impressive looking machine Kay. I bet you will have many happy hours of creating fashions for KC. Don't get your tiny, tinier car until you get your TV purchased and home-it might not fit in a little car :)
ReplyDeleteLinda: You're absolutely right! It's mostly to do heavier jobs and repairs. Hemming up jeans, the cover for the sewing machine, etc.
ReplyDeleteDenise: I wish it could sew by itself, too. That would be even better.
Sherri: I used to sew some of my kids' clothes but nowadays, it's cheaper to buy it already made. I'm sorry... but the Chinese are more talented and cheaper than me, I guess.
Joyce: It is rather beautiful. I like to just look at it. I turned it on just to see if it works and then I covered it back up again.
Peggy: I bought the cheapest of the "Cadillacs." Actually... wait... I think they said that the computerized one was a bit cheaper and could do much more. They were really advising me to get those. However, knowing how crazy my computer can make me sometimes, I opted for the mechanical, simpler one. So how come I'm too scared to use it?
Cheryl: We do actually also have the Hondo Odyssey mini van so bringing the TV home won't be a problem. Actually, we won't be buying a big TV. 32", I think is all we can fit... Unless we build a bigger house. Oh dear.
I used to sew clothes for my daughter and haven't gone near a machine in years. I'm glad you found one that you like...Michelle
ReplyDeleteHi Kay! Congrats on your purchase. I wish I lived near by so you could teach me to sew. My aunt used to sew. She made us many things, but unfortunately I was never interested in learning then. Now I want too. Well have fun with your sewing machine and keep us posted with your creations.
ReplyDeleteI bought a machine a couple of years ago when I lived in the UK. I had sewing lessons and its been the best fun. Enjoy Kay!!
ReplyDeleteThe best of luck with your new machine!!
