Flash Floods and Winter Damage in Hawaii

Here's a photo from the Honolulu Advertiser of some people being rescued by firemen when the flood waters overwhelmed them.

Some schools had to close because of the flash floods and torrential rains on Oahu. We had a bit of flooding in the backyard but not enough to worry about. It's rather nice that we live on a hill so the water tends to flow down. However, many families on the island were flooded out and some lost everything in their homes.

It was strange to hear of school closings because of rain in December. I'm so used to school closings only when the temperatures were well below freezing or there was a snowstorm in Illinois.

Still, it was surprising to hear of so many people getting flooded out. My cousin called to say that my aunt had lost power. I wanted them to come and stay with us but that would mean going out in the rain in heavy traffic. I hope they're OK...

  1. Oi, I hope your aunt is OK too. So glad you are on high ground. Floods look like a terrible thing anywhere.
I was just watching a video on your troubles from http://www.khnl.com/

  3. Wow. Yesterday I was wondering how you coped with winds that could loosen your gutters: now it seems like such a blessing to live so high, much better than floods!

I hope your Aunt has her power back soon, or that she can make it to your house after all. I'll keep everyone in my prayers.

  4. I guess I never thought of Hawaii having weather problems like these either -- just volcanos! Shows how much I don't know.

  6. I remember some pretty heavy rain when we were in Hawaii right after Christmas many years ago!
Here in Seattle we are getting ready for an arctic blast which will leave us with ice to contend with. Temporary shelters are opening for the homeless. Most of the power has been restored from the wind storm yesterday. Snow is being dumped on the mountain passes.

  7. OH MY!! I am hoping all is well. This is not good news at all.
We have some wicked winds blowing in with horrible arctic air that's bringing in terrible cold air but nothing like those floods and stuff.
    Stay safe!

  10. Flooding can be so terrible, so glad you're high enough up not to be troubled too much. We've had really heavy rain here too, and some areas have been flooded. Luckily, we're on a hill too, so no worries for us, but some areas have been badly affected. I hope your Aunt is okay.
