So I went a little closer with my macro lens. I was almost right up to it. (If you click on the photos, you can enlarge it even more.)

And then YIKES! It turned and seemed to sit on its haunches and stared at me as though to say, "Watch it! You're infringing on my personal space." Let me tell you I backed up plenty fast!
Good Lord, that's a huge bee! Kay, PLEASE, do not sacrifice your safety even for the sake of photography. I would have been running/swimming over to the next island just from seeing the bee from afar.
ReplyDeleteI do have to tell you it WAS a HUGE bee!
ReplyDeleteI read recently bees are becoming endangered, so you must have a wonderful garden if you have bees in it.
ReplyDeleteWow! He's beautiful. I've never seen a golden one. Bee careful.
ReplyDeleteI have GOT to learn how to use my digital camera so that I can get pictures like you do. Fantastic!! My, what big eyes he has!!
ReplyDeleteNice bee! looks like a toy...but of course is not, so be careful ;)

ReplyDeleteWhoa! He does look mean, doesn't he? Great photos, Kay. I wish I had a macro lens.
ReplyDeleteHe's pretty but I'd be backing away quickly, too!
ReplyDeleteWow--he DOES seem to be telling you to back off!
ReplyDeleteHe's gorgeous, but bees terrify me: congratulations on a great photo and I'm very glad you were left unstung.
Well, the photos are fabulous! and he is beautiful and scary!! So glad you didn't get stung, but glad you got the pictures to share with us. Thanks, Kay!
ReplyDeleteGreat picture Kay! Don't think I would've had the nerve to get too close, but we certainly appreciate your bravery for our enjoyment!! :)
ReplyDeleteKay, I can't believe how close you got to the bee and how he turned around and seemed to be really annoyed at you! The pics are great!!
ReplyDeleteNeat pictures. It was sure fun to awake this morning to songs of different birds than I'm used to. Aloha from Kauai.
ReplyDeleteGood heavens...I would've backed off from those eyes, too! Excellent photos!
ReplyDeleteI came to your blog for Skywatch and you photo is great - but - I have to comment on the bee - that's amazing and the close-ups are fantastic!
ReplyDeleteYikes! He's and big guy and kind of scary looking from the front.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely bee. I didn't know they had green eyes!
ReplyDeleteWise choice that bee is huge.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I think that's the biggest bee I've ever seen! The bottom picture made my hair stand on end... yikes!
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome series of shots! The final one is my favorite. I've never seen a golden bee beefore. :)
ReplyDeleteAmazing photos, Kay. I am leary of bees but this one is beautiful and the eyes-wow! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful sunny blog to visit from the depths of the Scottish winter. I'm interested to see your basil still going strong - mine was blackened by the first frosts ages ago.
ReplyDeleteThe golden bumble bee is rather wonderful!
Thanks for visiting my blog.
That's the queen Bee. Or so that's what my dad told me. We have a couple colonies here. They fly around my dad while he's working around the house and when he gets too close to their house, they just bump him, as if to tell him to move.
ReplyDeleteWow ... what an experience and what a level head to capture these great photos. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHugs and blessings,
