Want Some Pizza?

Someone I know was over for dinner one night and I'm leaving out all details because I don't want him/her to get in trouble. This person works for a fast food pizza restaurant and was watching while I prepared a green salad with mushroom, cucumbers, etc. He/She picked up one of the mushrooms and said, "Wow! Cool! At the pizza shop where I work all the mushrooms are really slimy and old. I forgot what a fresh mushroom was like. Nobody can tell what they're eating because once it's cooked in all that sauce, you can't tell."

Well.... yuck! That story kind of stuck with me and now I'm rather leery of buying pizza. I remember our school custodian telling me once, "I used to work in a restaurant and let me tell you, I'm not ordering anything that isn't cooked."

Sheesh!

Well... like my mom always says, "Home cooking is best." And since she's the one always cooking these days, I can't agree more.

  2. I was so close to responding, "In a word, YES!" Then I read on. Urp Gag! Think I'll head for the kitchen and make some fresh tempura veggies... and apples rolled in cinnamon and sugar while the batter's still hot.

I gotta tell ya, though. That photo of the pizza sure looks tasty!!

  3. I just picked any photo off of the Internet but now that I'm really looking at it, it does look pretty good, doesn't it? I'm sure those mushrooms aren't slimy.

  7. I also have a friend who does work that often puts him in the kitchens of restaurants. There are a number of places that he refuses to go to. Yup, home cooking is always the best, but I like Papa Murphy's pizza because you can watch them assemble it then cook it at home. Makes me feel better anyway.

  8. Oh gross, Kay!!! I hate mushrooms anyway, but you really do need to think about stuff like this when you go out to eat. I enjoy cooking and baking but sometimes it certainly is nice to sit and pick what you want and be served!! Lucky you that your mom is doing the cooking! I bet she makes some real tasty things!!

  9. Now now, you won't die from a few slimy mushrooms. You do have a good cooking arrangement at your new home. You remind me of two pizza stories:
We vols at Heifer Ranch used to go into Perryville (Arkansas) to Bubba's Place for their 26-inch Belly Buster Pizza. We joked that it was Roadkill Pizza, like, with armadillo etc.
During the 1991 Gulf War I was working at a foreign embassy near Tel Aviv. The building got hit by an Iraqi Scud missile. We were a small staff, working fast to salvage and pack equipment and papers before the next barrage. I'll never forget the kindness of another embassy: the H.E. Ambassador of Japan appeared at the gate bearing boxes of pizza for us! And it was "Hawaiian pizza," with pineapple!

  10. Oh my goodness, Dina! Oh my goodness, Dina! Oh My GOODNESS! That is so scary! I had no idea you were in that kind of situation! Sheesh! Everytime I see pineapple on a pizza, I'm going to think of you.

  11. Well, thank goodness I'm not into mushrooms. I don't even order pizzas anyways, I make my own, it's much funner anyways! You can add what you want, as much as you want... I'm a vegetarian and you just don't always know if you will be getting exactly what you ordered or is there a bit of meat on that "vegetarian" pizza you ordered. Better be safe than sorry!!

  12. I left a comment, but it didn't show. Hmmm.

Well, I had said that I worked in a pizza place in college, and while there were stories I could tell you, at least the veggies were always fresh!
