We've had an ongoing battle of wills and superior intelligence with the bulbuls and mynahs and we still don't know who is winning. The bulbuls are birds that keep eating all, and I mean ALL the blossoms off the lemon tree and the baby buds off my mother's prized orchid plants. I don't know where we got the idea but we decided to hang up used data disks and so far the sparkling, moving disks seem to keep the birds away.

We were feeling downright clever, but was surprised to see these disks in Miyajima, Japan when we were traveling there last month.

I'm not sure how long these disks will work before the birds figure out they've been had. Being called a bird brain isn't necessarily an insult as far as I'm concerned because it's really hard to get the better of these bird brains.
Twirling shiny scarecrows, great! Maybe you can group them and make them into windchimes too. hehe
ReplyDeleteTalk about bird brain. Yesterday I saw a black bird throw a nut from high above on his wire and then come down to see if it had cracked.
Good luck with that. It is so annoying when they destroy everything. Do they have to be so greedy?
ReplyDeleteHello Kay !
ReplyDeleteYes, birds are afraid of the noise made by these CDs... Nice idea...
See You later !
A good idea. I don't mind sharing but if they destroy everything it's not funny anymore. The sulphur crested cockatoos which visit my garden destroy every year all my pecan nuts when they are still green. I told them to come when they are ripe and they can share with me. It is like talking to a wall! I try the disks! Thank you Kay.
ReplyDeleteThat's a clever idea! I wonder how their eyes perceive those great eyes without bodies that you have hung up! I wonder, too, if they enjoy the game. Great story, Kay. Good luck with this one.
ReplyDeletewell, sounds like a good solution to a persistent problem. glad it works.
ReplyDeleteHe, birds can be very clever! My dog loves to chase blackbirds, but he never gets them. The bird is too quick, and flies away at the very last moment. Then it sits down above on a tree and scolds down on our dog.
ReplyDeleteThe bird plays with the dog deliberately!
Thank you for leading me to your beautiful blog! :)
Have a nice weekend!
Hi Kay! Hopefully this works. Some birds can be very destructive. Lisa
ReplyDeleteMy parents have also used old CD's for this purpose in their backyard garden.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I read your post about Feedjit and how someone seems to be following you. I also have the feedjit feature on my blog. And I constantly have a Knoxville, TN visitor. I think this might possibly be Feedjit keeping track of my very own computer. I had the same feeling as you. But it might just be your own computer. I hope that is the case and you don't have some odd person watching you.

Kay, what an ingenious idea! I hope those birds don't ever figure out how to avoid the disks! Maybe your lemons and orchids will fare better!
ReplyDeleteHi Kay - thank you so much for visiting my blog and leaving your kind comment. So glad I decided to look you up. Enjoyed reading about the birds - great idea to try to deter them if only for a short while. The are clever though aren't they. I've watched magpies pick up some hard dry bread and dip in into water before eating it.
ReplyDeleteHope your CDs continue to do the trick.

Oh, no. NOT the orchid buds! That I absolutely would not tolerate. Supposedly red pepper deters birds. Try spinkling some on the orchid buds or anywhere else the darned birds frequent.
ReplyDeleteYou might try mylar windsocks as that is what I use on my windows. They are shiny and move in the wind...
ReplyDeleteWhat an ingenious crew you have in your happy home. I wonder if it's the movement, the glare, maybe even a quick reflection of themselves...what is it that makes the shiny CDs work? Well, who cares really, as long as your mom's orchids can become the beautiful flowers they're meant to be, and you can make some fresh lemonade to enjoy on the lanai.
ReplyDeleteFuns story!!!
I'm with you--I don't necessarily think "bird brain" is an insult, since I seem to get birds here that are smarter than I am!
ReplyDeleteAn inexpensive fix, and they look kind of cool, too.
ReplyDeleteA wonderful idea, I hope it continues to work for you.
ReplyDeleteThat's a very good idea to use old Cd's !!
ReplyDeleteOh, this is too too funny. Be sure to let us know if the birds figure it out or not. That will be interesting.
