I’ve gotten several lovely buys from Craig’s List but I have to tell you that you’ve got to be very careful. I recently saw a lamp that was touted as an Ikea desk lamp for $40.00. Well, I’m not sure people in Hawaii realize that Ikea is known for their low prices and good but not necessarily great quality. We have a desk lamp just like the one being sold that we bought in Chicago at the Ikea store for about $13.00. I’ve seen other items going for very high prices that make me wonder if people really get anywhere near the prices they are asking. I guess with these tough economic times people are just trying to get the most that they can. But then again, why even bother to try to sell $4,000.00 pieces of furniture on Craig’s List? People go to Craig’s List for bargains. Then there are those people who try to sell their things without a photo. Oh dear! Would you even think to consider something without seeing what it looks like?
And speaking of bargains, have you noticed Macy's slashing prices on a number of their merchandise? It's been helpful for me since I'm trying to replace the things I did not bring with me when we moved to Hawaii a few months ago... silly things like muffin pans, cookie sheets, stock pot, etc. I've told my husband that I need to go out there and spend just to help the economy. He's not buying that though.
I apologize in advance for the editorial:
ReplyDeleteI miss Marshall Field's
Okay. I am done! I am amazed at the things I am finding people offering for sall lately too! The number of things on Freecycle is also growing. Glad to hear that there are bargains in Hawaii!
My son has gotten some incredible things at incredible prices on Craig's List, but I know there can be some people who ask the impossible and you wonder about them. One does need to be aware.
ReplyDeleteLike we say around here when someone overvalues something that they have for sale, "They sure are proud of it!" I guess it's just a Southern thing.
ReplyDeleteI missed Marshall Fields when we were living in Chicago, too. Here in Hawaii Macy's used to be Liberty House and that was also a much loved long time institution. I do miss Liberty House also.
ReplyDeleteKay, I had heard that you need to be careful with some things and some people on Craig's List. That is where we heard about our rescue dog, Teddy. I am thankful we got him, but I really don't think dogs, puppies, cats, etc. should be put on there. You never know who you are dealing with and where the animals came from. I took a chance, but had Teddy checked out by our Vet, etc. I just hope other people have been so lucky.
ReplyDeleteI know Ikea, but not the others...
ReplyDeleteYes, we must look at the price before to buy anything now !
See You later !
Hey... I for one am darn proud of ya for doin your part to help the economy! That deserves a big "Atta Girl". Acutally, I've tried using the same line. My husband doesn't buy into it either.
ReplyDeleteI don't buy online. I've had a couple of mmmm, shall I say "odd" experiences and it doesn't seem to work out the way I think it should. My daughter, on the other hand, buys TONS of stuff on e-bay, craigs list, etc... Guess you just have to know how to do it.
Great post, Kay. Thanks for all the good information. I don't buy online, but this is good to know, just in case.
