Another Craig's List Find!

You know how strangely funny some things are that it just feels like it was meant to be? I wanted a desk or table in my home office that had to fit in this particular space. I'd looked at stores but it was hard to find the exact size. I needed it to be between 50 and 52 inches wide, light wood (preferably oak to match the other two), relatively sturdy and reasonably priced. I found a maple desk listed on Craig's List before we left for Japan more than a month ago but we didn't have time to investigate it so we let it go.

Well, two nights ago I was looking at old listings on Craig's List and I saw the desk still there. She had it listed for $150.00 which was more than I wanted to pay so I left a message asking if she'd consider $75.00. She called and said I could have it for that price if I came before Saturday. We went today and picked it up and I couldn't believe it fit our space perfectly. Not only that but the wood turned out to be not maple but solid oak. Also, Gloria, who sold it to me is from the Chicagoland area and went to Northwestern University in Evanston 5 minutes from where I lived.

Some things are just meant to be. I'm so excited and now my office feels complete! I now have a writing desk, a computer desk and a sewing table. Yahoo!

Does anybody have any advice on what brand of sewing machine I should get? I'm not a great sewer. I need something that will sew jeans hems.

  1. Congratulations, titchadshi. Kay, you are so organized, a desk for every task!
Hey, can I send you some jeans to hem? LOL How come they don't sell them in lengths anymore? I can never shorten them right by hand.

  7. To comment on your comment about the Japanese being polite etc., that you left on my blog...

I was there from October 1953 through May 1956. It was during their period of reconstruction and there was little money or much of anything among all the people I met. So the blackmarket flourished.

I was at home about ten years old when Japan was about to be defeated in world war two and the propaganda I saw at the movies was vivid and the newsreels of the Bataan Death March and things like that left an impression on me that the Japanese were a bad race of people and I should avoid them at all costs. I don't know if you know about those propaganda times or not but they were that way on both sides.

So, when I arrived in Yokohama harbor and we passed the antisubmarine nets the Japanese Imperial Navy strung across the harbor entrance to keep American submarines out, I shuddered at the thought I was about to live here for some period of time.

I went from that stage with a profound dislike to liking the Japanese a lot and I never met one who was bitter because we were an occupation force and we had won the war and they had lost it.

Instead, I found a people who were humble, polite, courteous, generous, and forgiving. They were more than willing to stop whatever they were doing and help me. I made many friends there and some of them are still my friends.

So, I would be your typical American, from the days of Pearl Harbor and the war years who had little use for the nation of Japan. I went there and met the people and lived among them for a long time and I like just about everything about Japan from their raked gravel gardens at their temples to Sapporo beer.

  8. What a wonderful find! I am very happy for you! I believe my machine is a White. Very basic, probably not the best there is, but it sews pretty near everything. Including faux fur if you want to create an animal costume for Halloween...

  12. It is a small world. I ran into a former student yesterday that I haven't seen in 25 years. Fortunately, she recognized me because the last time I saw her she was in 5th grade--she had grown up. We have run into people we know (or people who know people we know) in the strangest places.

The moral is: don't do anything you wouldn't want your friends and family to find out about because they probably will.

Glad you had success with your desk.

  13. Great find! My son gets stuff for us on Craigs List all the time and it's the best! A Kenmore sewing machine would probably work quite well for what you want to use it for.

  14. Serendipity! It's the best! What a perfect desk!

As far as sewing machines go, I know there are now models out there that are computer programmed, very fancy schmancy. All I know is I got a very nice Singer sewing maching for a wedding present....30 years ago...and to this day when I have to (usually repair) use it, it works like a charm! Simple, in my case is really good!

  15. Beautiful desk. What a great deal!!
Remember I mentioned the Singer 301? These are fantastic machines that will sew through jeans easily. They are older but made of cast aluminum with no plastic parts. Easily found on ebay and very reasonable in the tan color. (Everyone wants a black one so they are more expensive.) Any newer Singers are junk. I mean anything from the 1970's on.
If you want something brand new I recommend that you take some old jeans in and make them let you sew across the seams right there in the store. If they won't let you then don't buy from them. Don't buy any machine from Wal Mart!!

  16. Hi, Kay. I was going to email this directly to you, but I see you are set up as no reply. Check out ebay item #350117593488 for an example of a great workhorse machine. I have two!!

  17. No kidding? Singer? I had a Bernina before... the lowest end model which worked really well. I had the Singer Golden Touch and Sew but it didn't do well. I'll have to look into Singer again. Thank you so much for all the information. Not Walmart?

  18. Your desk is beautiful, and the wood has a beautiful grain and just gleams. What a find. As far as sewing machines go, I have a Bernina, about 18 years old now, and it sews through most anything.

  19. Kay, NO not a new Singer! No, no, no!!! Only the old Singers are good. Nothing newer than a 1950's model. Berninas are wonderful, as are Pfaff and Husquevarna!! Do not buy a Wal Mart machine.

  20. Thanks, Julie! I will most certainly heed your advice. I really appreciate it. Where do you change the No Reply thing? I tried to find it. I didn't know there was a way to make it so people could respond directly to you. Whatever the case, my e-mail is travelerswife@hotmail.com.
