Not Dentures...Yet

My jaw clicks. Yup. I rather knew that.

However when my tooth chipped at the base, my dentist said it was because my bite was funny and I was probably grinding my teeth. I don't think I do but I do chomp down hard. She said it could be the crowns that were put in or a myriad other reasons and sent me to see a prosthodontist. I never even knew there was such a doctor as a prosthodontist. I suppose as we age I get to learn about all kinds of different doctors that I never knew existed.

Well, my prosthodonist's name is Dr. Kevin Loo and he is the nicest person. I love his hygenist, too. He's fitted me out in a mouth splint. He says I'll have to use it for the "rest of my life."

Something about him saying , "the rest of your life" that was a little unnerving. He says he wears one, too. But I wonder if he's going to wear it for the rest of his life because he looks half my age.

Whatever the case, he's monitoring to see if my jaw aligns itself better. My mother thought it was hilarious that I have to wear this at night and soak it in Polident or Efferdent in the daytime just like she does her dentures in the evening.

I wonder what else will go off kilter as I age. It's a little annoying at times but I guess you have to try to laugh about it and get on with it. Art thinks it's funny when he can't understand me sometimes when I have it in.

Hope you all had a great weekend. I'm going to go get my splint on now.

  1. Kay, guess what? It is way more common than you think. I have one too.

I grind my teeth in my sleep and am meant to waer it every night (and dont always). It gets worse if I get stressed.

They advise anyone with crowns to do so to protect them. I think I wrote a post about my splint too!

And no, I have never heard of a prosthodonist.

So cheer up and know that there is osmeone on the other side of the world doing exactly the same thing. And I didnt get told it was for the rest of my life - ohhh - I guess it must be.

  4. Darlin', when you get to be my age...
you start to see all of the "ologists". Cardiologist, Retinologist, Rheumatologist, etc.

You're young yet. Not to worry! This little thing is not a problem.

  5. Doesn't life become full of indignities as you get older? The body you've relied on all these years suddenly seems to have a mind of its own - and not always a very nice mind I fear.

  7. Oops! The population of teeth grinders seems to be growing! I too, seem to gnash my teeth in my sleep. So, a DENTIST, not a prosthodontist, made my night guard. Well, actually, Chandi made my nightguard. We were both working in a dentist's office at the time. They're relatively simple to make. I don't know very many dentists who don't have the capability to do it. It was decided that I should wear one to protect my implants. I have six dental implants.... and the bad habit of never wearing my nightguard, as in it hasn't been in my mouth in four years.

I hope I never have to take blood pressure medication. I'm not really a creature of habit. I have a hard time slipping into any kind of a routine. I like doing whatever, whenever...

So, here's to you being a LOT better at taking advantage of something that really will protect other teeth and crowns...and really will help you to wake up without a niggling ache in your jaw. Even though you may say, "Gudnische, sveathurt" to your hubby before crawling under the covers....

  8. This got my day off to a good start. I still have all my teeth, but it seems at this age something "wears out" every month. Ah, the joys of aging!

  13. I remember when I was a kid and got my braces off. I had to wear this ugly head-gear at night and I would drool and wake up with crusted saliva all over my face. This post vividly reminded me of that wonderful time so long ago. It's amazing the things we must go thru at one point or another in our lives.

  14. I am supposed to get one..but I already use a CPAP at night..how much stuff do we end up wearing when we get older that is not cute, but necessary. Kay..you are my highlighted blog as you are the match-maker to us blogger friends

  15. I recently started wearing a plate that virtually dislocated my jaw. Had it adjusted and it was better but frankly I am not happy with it or without it... but it is better without it. Sigh.

  16. It is just like my 11 year old daughter's retainer! She takes a Sharpie pen and scribbles out "Denture" on the package of denture cleanser so that it just says "Cleanser"! LOL

  17. Hi! Had to smile at your story about your teeth! I don't feel so alone now. I've been grinding a long while myself, and as a younger person I refused to wear the mouth guard -- it felt too 'unromantic'. Shall I admit that I'm now paying for that...a couple of teeth actually broke...so which is more romantic??

I had fun browsing your site -- my first time here. I'll come again.
