Hawaiian Wedding

With the ocean in front of them and his family behind him, my nephew, Barry, affectionately known as Bear was married to Miho yesterday under a glorious Hawaiian sky. It was simple and about as inexpensive as you could make it but it carried a lot of weight, warmth and above all... love.

I can't begin to express what a marvelous person Bear is. From the time he was born, he was warm and cuddly. He puts everyone's needs before his own. I still remember last year when my son, Jon came for a short stay, Bear rushed over through traffic and heat after a tiring day at work to visit with his cousin before he left.

When I heard that he and Miho would be married by a judge in a short ceremony, I wished for something more "special" for him. That was silly of me. As we stood with them in the glowing sunset I could see that this was incredibly special because he and Miho are special. It was the moment that was special. The judge, dressed in his robes with a Hawaiian flavor made sure that the ceremony would have all the grandeur, humor and beauty it deserved.

I've seen a lot of marriages that started with extravagant, expensive weddings fail. I have as much hope, best wishes and expectations for happiness for Bear and Miho as I would if they'd spent a million dollars on their wedding.

The wedding cake was the toasted ice cream specialty of the restaurant. It was as beautiful as any $1,000.00 luxury cake amidst the laughter and friendship surrounding them.

  3. How much money was spent on the wedding doesn't make it a great wedding. It's about the couple and the love that they share. Beautiful pictures, and what a glorious setting! Congrats to the couple!

  4. I love this wedding! I am no longer impressed by expensive, extravagant weddings where parents and couples go into debt for show. It seems to be wedding competition these days.
    Congratulations to the happy couple.

  5. Obviously a very meaningful wedding. I prefer that to a lot of "show" that means little except amount of money spent.

  6. what a joyous occasion, can think of many couples who would love to be married on the beach in hawaii. lovely location...what's important is they celebrated their love with family and friends as they officially were married. fun to see.

  9. I always thought it was silly to spend so much money on a wedding. Use that money for a nice honeymoon or a down payment on a house! Or new furniture. Their wedding is one that many people would be envious of. What beautiful scenery.

  10. I agree with you. One of my all time favortie wedding photographs is of a couple in Hawaii. They're standing on a wall of rocks at the swa shore. The sand is pure and white, the water is unbelievably blue, and the sky shows the beginnings of a glorious sunset. She's in a very plain white wedding dress with a couple of leis and flowers in her hair. He's in white clamdigger pants, a white shirt, a long single lei, and both of them are in their bare feet. It's so simple. I understand that the bride said, "I
don't care so much about a great wedding... I'm going for a great marriage." I feel like she had one of the greatest weddings of all time...and I have great confidence in their marriage.

When I saw these photo's of your Bear and his beautiful bride, and read your post...I was reminded of my friends wedding picture and broke our in a huge smile. This young couple is on their way to a long and satisfying life loving each other and enjoying the true gifts of value that life has to offer.

Please pass on my congratulations and wish them Happy Ever After for me.

  11. You're so right Kay, so many people don't enjoy their wedding because they're run ragged by the time it comes along, and then their family is saddled with a huge debt. We planned ours within three weeks, and only invited the immediate family, thirteen in all (13!!)and it was a lovely day that I still remember with nothing but affection.

  13. This does look like a very special wedding and I agree with the simple ceremony idea totally for that is what we had. We were far from home on the west coast and our family was in the east and we knew very few people where we were. So, although I wore the traditional bridal white, and we got married in a beautiful chapel at the university, we only had two friends attend. Our memories are of a beautiful wedding. Best wishes to the bridal couple.
